Hello again,
I don't know whether it's a huge faux pas to post two messages in a row, but I just forgot a few other things that I can't figure out. If it's too much, just let me know.
1) I'm having problems with my TDK440N DVD+-RW drive. The drive itself works, and it works with Toast Titanium. BUT, neither the finder nor iTunes will burn to it. They can read from it, but can't burn to it. Is there any piece of software or system extension that will let me burn from iTunes or the Finder. I don't care so much about the Finder, but I like burning audio CDs from iTunes better than with Toast. I searched the forum on accer8yourmac (or some such) and I came up with a tantalizing post from somebody who said he'd downloaded some sort of patch, but he never said WHERE he got it from.
2) There's this streaming QuickTime clip from CNN that I'm dying to download to my hard drive so I can own it forever, not just until the link goes dead. Now I've tried using QuickTime Pro to save the movie to my hard drive, but it doesn't work. It's just a still picture of the first frame of the clip with no sound. Is there any software that will capture streaming video for me? The best I've been able to do is an app called "ScreenCapture" which saves movement on the screen as a QT mov file. I can have this program capture the movie as I play it on my screen, but the quality suffers.....sort of like taking a picture of a picture. I'd like to capture the original data directly. Any suggestions would be welcome.
As always, many thanks.

Hey Galactica,
Wow! You're really on top of this forum. Answers within minutes! I thank you.
Re: the video capturing issue, I'm working along much the same lines as you, only using ScreenCapture instead of QuickSnapz. This makes me sort of happy. I'm using wiretap to get the audio as well. How exactly would you synch the sound with the video? I'm using iMovie; is there something better?
Re: the TDK drive. I'm using a Powerbook, and I'm not man enough to open it up and install a drive for fear of having no computer at all. I'm also not rich enough to afford to send the Powerbook away to have a burner installed. So I bought an external Firewire TDK440N drive. Right now, it's the only device hooked up to the Firewire port. I did the whole "About this Mac" thing and then clicked the button to get the rest of the story. There's no mention there about disc burning, so maybe I'm just stuck using Toast to burn. I guess there are worse things.
Still, if anybody knows about a patch or a plugin out there that would help, I'd be grateful.

actually.... this makes a huge difference.
external burners are not compatible with the iApps to the best of my knowledge
hence the great wonders of Toast 6 (if you think its great - debatable....)
either way, i dont think you will ever get a patch to make that external burner burn through iApps (i could be wrong though...)
and actually, taking apart a powerbook is quite easy its just the 1st time that you are like OMG! how ever will i do this!
then its a piece of cake.
there are MILLIONS of tutorials out there, just google it if you are interested.
syncing
i just use quicktime pro and add the video (select all video, copy) to the audio (select all, EDIT, ADD or ADD SCALED)
always add video to audio, otherwise it sounds REALLY messed up.
next, since its most likely off sync, i save this file to my HD, then fire up Sync Hole, where I can move audio and video back and forth until they match, then save again and i have my video file final. -
I've got a Pioneer A05/105 in a firewire case. There is a patch to let external CDRW/DVD burners work with DVD player, iTunes and Disk Burner/ finder burner what ever it's called. Since it's reconized as a Super drive that is all that is needed for my drive to work. For non Superdrives there is a new patch app that patches the DVD drives listed in the Mac OS so that they will work with drives that don't have drivers. I don't think these patches are considered warzes but to be safe not listing any more info on them.
OWC hired somone to make an app so iDVD would run on their new line of DVD burners in firewire cases a while back. Apple legal shut them down quickly. This app is available on the web but only works with OSX 10.1.5 and older. Macbidoville.com super patch writer wrote a patch so iDVD can be opened on any machine but it's just so you can look at it . It doesn't run nor can you do anything with it. He wrote that Apple made it clear there would be trouble if he released info on how to run iDVD on non Apple internal burners. So while it's possible for iDVD to work, all the people who know how to are afraid of Apple legal. It seems to not be something the average guy can figure out.
No intent to encourage warez in this post. Just posting info. -
HEY! Good news to report, so I thought I'd share so that anyone else with the TDK 440N burner might benefit. The newest OS update (10.2.8) provides support. Just update (as I did) and.....problem solved! Hope someone can use this little tidbit.
Till later,
