Hi all, I'm new to the forums and I am looking for some advice from anyone with experience in the area of setting up home theatre dvd playing systems for an idea that I have. To me it makes little sense to mess with going from one player to another as soon as some new format comes out and run into all sorts of compatibility issues in the process when a computer dvd rom drive with the right software can play anything that comes out. Likewise, if you use a video capture card to take all your old vhs tapes and convert them to svcd or dvd, then you have no need for keeping a vhs recorder either. My idea is to use my computer as my stand alone dvd player to serve dvd movies to my tv, as well as to use it for playing cd's, mp3's, ogg vorbis, and etc. However, here is my problem. To do so at present, to my knowledge, requires running from a fairly pricey sound card, a digital output to a home theatre reciever and then also running from your video cards tv out to your tv, but as of yet, to my knowledge once again, there are no video cards that have component video outs you can run to your tv. Are there any converters or adapters you can get for a Pc video card or sound card to make running this connection easier? Likewise, I find it a problem to be able to find digital coax cabling and svideo cabling long enough to run all the way from my pc to my tv and/or reciever as well. I'd see it as a solution to only need a tv and be able to do away with the reciever as well if you could run a good quality set of pc surround speakers from your pc to handle the audio. However, this is the other issue I have run into, even the high dollar sets of pc 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 speakers that I have seen so far, don't have long enough cables to be able to place all the speakers around a large room. Does anyone know of any potential solution to this as well? It would seem with the possibilities you could get rid of everything except your TV and be able to run all your home theatre media from your PC, but I am unsure where to start looking to be able to find answers to address the issues I have run into with this. I'd appreciate any help or advice anyone could give on this.
