I didn't know what forum to put this in, I hope it's the right one.
Okay, what I want to do is:
Take various movies on my hard drive that are in various formats (DIVX, XVID, SVCD, VCD, MPG, AVI, etc.) and change them into .vob so they can be burned onto a DVD through Nero and played on ANY DVD player.
I know just about nothing about video conversion, so it would have to be step by step, and I would have to know the programs to use as well.
Thank you very much..

DIVX, XVID, SVCD, VCD, MPG, AVI, etc.) and change them into .vob
Start at the convert section on the left and follow through those steps.
Look at the Glossary here IF you find some terms you're not familiar with.
Be prepared to hit lots of snags with any files that may have come from downloads. Possible headache alley ahead for you.
Good luck with it.There's no place like 127.0.0.1

You are ambitious. Are you sure you don't want to add a few
more formats ? How about RM, MOV, Flash. WMV. -
I'm sorry I ever even asked. I didn't think this was a forum full of ignorant people.
-
Cunfuzed, I suggest you ignore the attitudes of the previous posters. They did offer good advice though. Read some articles and guides, try a few things. When you come unstuck, come back and ask specific questions.
The step by step instructions you want are already available in the guides if you care to look, just make the effort and you will be rewarded. -

Get a comfy chair, some food and drink and prepare to do a lot of work to achieve what you want. Take them one at a time. Read, read and then read some more.
When you start to get your head around things and have a specific question, post again, but please title your question with something that describes it. Not "help me". Those kinds of posts either get ignored, or depending on people's moods, the time of day, etc., you may get jumped on like you did this time. There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Well it looks as though you must have all the codecs to watch the movies. There are several routes you can go. What I do is this. Take the DIVX/XVID and use GOLDWAVE to make a .WAV file to go with the .AVI file. Then I take, TMPGEnc (IMHO the best) to convert the 2 into a compliant DVD .MPG stream. Once I have my DVD mpg file, I use ULEAD MovieFactory2 or Pinnacle 8 to burn the DVD. TMPGEncDVD Author is also ok but requires a little more fiddling around with to get what you want. The ULEAD & Pinnacle programs will make the VOB files & all folders required for the DVD. Nero works well too, but this is just how I do it. I have a P4 3.06, 1G RAM, with an ATI 128 Pro Video Card. From start to finish, a 1 hour 45 min movie takes about 3 hours to get onto a DVD.
A movie in SVCD or VCD format requires a little different approach. Remember this....CRAP IN-->CRAP OUT. VCDs don't provide the best results but for SVCDs & VCDs I want on DVD, I do this. I take DVD2AVI & load in the SVCD/VCD mpg & make a .D2V file. Then I use GOLDWAVE to make a .WAV file from the SVCD/VCD .mpg. Then I load the .d2v & .wav files into TMPGEnc & convert the stream into a DVD compliant .mpg & burn the movie with ULEAD. If you don't have a compliant DVD stream, some programs like TMPGEnc DVD Author will not burn it or like ULEAD will try and re-encode it which doesn't work out the best.
Hope this helps.

Hey I have to object to that, Gees is not ignorant.
In the time it took me to type and- and correct - my second post all that other stuff came through!
Don't know if I'd have bothered if I'd known I got lumped in with all you lot! (sans Bugster, natch!) :cD And tarred with the same brush.

Cunfused - maybe - just a suggestion - you should clear the air & apologize for calling everyone ignorant. :c*
I know you got a lot of sarcastic responses, unpleasant for you, but mostly harmless. But no one stooped to name-calling.
You're going to see the same names around here time and time again. Best to be able to stick around with no grudges being held. Believe it or not, these are the same people that may really be able to help in a pinch somewhere down the road.
Your decision. There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Well, what are we supposed to do. ?
You can't write 10 pages even if you know it all.
It's true, I'm ignorant. But this guy needed to be made aware
somehow that he's looking at a few weeks of study, minimum..
He actually expected someone to tell him THE ANSWER.
If you tell them to look at the guides, they get pissed off.
If you ignore them, they get pissed off.
If you make sarcastic comments, they get pissed off.
I didn't help on this one, but I didn't hurt either. ta2 did.

Oh I missed that comment! :cD I guess some did name-call.
I do notice we all get less tolerant as the day progresses. Coincidence?

That's a new one. What's Sarky ?
I am ignorant. I don't know a damned thing about mpeg4 -
Hey Cunfuzed,
the ones who can read an use a keyboard for what it´s made, have a strong advantage!!!
This site is even the best adress for ur problem u can ever get!
Its full of information, how to´s and newbieguides updated daily!
What would u think will it be, if everyone expects a walkthrough like u do?
All the people with their great know how, would guide every noob till the end...ok and then? What did u learn then?
"Install that, run program, click here, write that there, click start, take the ***file and open with that, burn with that...finished!"
And then? First of all u learn nothing! I´m sure u were not able to reproduce anything!
The second thing, in that time the one tells u what 2 do he has written a guide for it! And got a drink with some friends aswell
So first RTFM!!!
As I did!*just another noob* -
Foo - sarky is just sarcastic. :c) I think that's how you'd spell it.
Yeah, I noticed your post about Mpeg4. I think you've still got plenty of time to learn about it - if you think you should. :c)
Nothing's going to explode if you don't, I'm sure. :c)
Hey I saw a post of yours today that made my head wobble! Felt like a know nothing instantly! :cD
AND......... you had me going to the Glossary with another you did. Something I haven't done since I started, except to make convenient links for newbies. There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Well, I guess I'm the bad guy for not knowing how much work was needed, and not knowing what anything in the guides meant. I WILL not be coming back to this forum or this site, and I WILL NOT be recommending it to ANYONE. All you do is get bashed for asking a question. If someone would have explained, without sarcasm, ignorance, intolerance, or any of that, that all the information was in the guides, and gave me an idea where to start. I DO NOT owe anyone an apology when I just got bashed. You have a very sad forum.
-
I am sorry to hear that. Note that the first 2 replies to you
were completely reasonable. If it had been me I would have
started reading.
This is the most informative site around, and you will never
get good at video by giving up that easily. -
Very well put. If someone like that wants to convert all his procured files into vobs and burn to DVD that can be played on almost any player, he should first seek a degree in video editing. Next time just ask for a small piece of pie not the whole dam pie factory, geez..... and who's ignorant here (someone still in high school based on that response)!

FOO, what do you want to know about MPEG4 ? I know a bit. With all the laughs you give me (damned funny posts, man), I'm willing to tell you all I know.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I really need an official spec. I havent looked very hard.
I have 13818-2 so i'm ok with mpeg 1/2
For example why is it wrapped in an AVI ? -

Get a new attitude, then when you want to learn something come back!
It's good to ask a question, but you should at least KNOW what your asking about. And look to see if it has been asked 100 times before. If it has, then chances are the same answers still apply!
If you look at this site, nearly anything is covered with sometype of how to guide. There is even a What is section on the left in blue! Look at that to see the basic what is this and thats. Then move to the Green Section that applies to what you want to do!
"CONVERT" 5th one down! If you want to capture VHS "CAPTURE" 4th one down! Look in the section that most closely matches your project!
Need programs? See what you are trying to do, read the guides, then look in tools section for list of free, trial, and pay tools, user comments about them and links to download them from!
Got questions about something specific, ask specific question.
I know just about nothing about video conversion, so it would have to be step by step, and I would have to know the programs to use as well.
"Step by step" sounds like guides to me, try guide section!
"Programs to use", once you look at the other stuff you will have a better idea which might suit your purpose, so look in tools section!
Nothing in the world is "THE BEST". Thats why you have so many cars to choose from to drive. Some people like large gas hogs, some like little balls that get 45mpg. What's best or easiest for one person is not for everyone. I like large trucks, my friends like little mini vans, so goes life!
What's best for me ain't best for you and the other way too!
As far as Nero, if you look around you will see many people have a problem with nero, and there does not seem to be a garuanteed ON ANY DVD PLAYER answer at all! -
