Is it possible directly copy a HDTV signle to your hard drive? Not captured, not re-encoded, but keep the MPEG-2 stream exactly as it was when broadcasted? If so, how would I go about doing this? I am sure I would need a special HD reciever of some sort.

Check out some HDTV capture cards. There are ones that save digital stream directly. I don't have any brands off hand but it is a direction to look in. I think that would be your only option.

Your best option is MyHD 120 card from
www.digitalconnection.com
It captures and saves OverTheAir HDTV streams with no modification, no encryption, it even has a nice Full Screen Displey option so you can build an HD-Tivo with a cheap Penium III and a nice, big Hard Drive.
I've had it for a month and it's surprisingly stable.
Beware: you need 10 Gigas per hour of recording. -
Please change "Displey" for "Display" and "Penium" for "Pentium". I need some cofee.
