I want to back up all files and setting (about 20gigs), I have only done so using an external hard drive and was wondering if people have had good success using DVDs, since it would take 4 or 5 discs worth?
thanks

Judging from you saying "settings", I have to assume that you are using some kind of backup program. Maybe you could mention which program it is? If you just mean select every file and copy it to the external hard drive, I don't see how using DVDs instead would cause a problem.
I know I have has a litle difficulty getting Norton Ghost to burn directly to CD-R. I normally just backup to a hard drive, then use nero to transfer the .gho files to a DVD. Works like a charm, if not a little slow."A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct."
