  1. Hi, I go to college and the college has put a block file-sharing programs such Kazaa and WinMx. Right I'm using Ares to download my shit but it has a problem downloading stuff, I can never connect to download a file. So my question is, is there a file-sharing program that doesn't use port 6969?
    Thanks

I assume that the things you are trying to download are all legal and public domain, but I have to give credit to your college for trying to stop the rampant thievery that is completely bankrupting the artists.

Guess you'll have to learn a more elegant way to get you digital fix.

Kazaa the AOL of point and click thievery. So easy any idiot can use it.

Have you checked to see what alternate ports are available for use with Kakaa and the rest? There is always an alternate port for those things.

I see you're fairly new to this site...a word of advice, kazaa and downloading in the same sentence does not help you here.

Might have had more respect if it wasn't the first post from this person.

guys, I think we scared him away.....

I think its funny now how colleges are putting limits on this sort of stuff. I was in college when napster was at its peak. It was almost a given that you were sharing your songs with those on campus (and others, but the campus ones were FAST! cause it was its own network).

My younger brother is in college now, and he told me his downloads are capped on the school's network.

Probably because all the "music stealers" are college students, so i can see why college's are doing this now, but wow what a change!

Sometimes they only cap certain protocols. He might want to try a different method, or at least a different port.

I've never been into the whole P2P sharing scene and don't use any of those programs. But when I was in college, I know people doing that bogged down the network. I mean, some of us are trying to do honest to God productive things like playing Starcraft online but these people take our bandwidth!

I actually saw a news report today about a college that blocked file swapping programs and the network usage dropped 60%. That means over half of the traffic on the network was most likely illegal. I am not surprised schools are beginning to block access. Being the account holders, I can see possible legal consequences for them.

A lot of schools are starting to put restrictions on that kind of stuff...I know my college is. I think its fair because I dont like to spend time downloading things that arent free and raise the price for others.

  15. The File-sharing programs which work is, Ares which sucks and FTP server which works really good. I use it to download movies which I pay for monthly. I've always hated Kazaa but it's the program with tons of users sharing files and actually good download rate. I hated Kazaa because it was sometimes a different named file or a virus. I used Winmx with different ports and still doesn't work! The reason why I download music is because their is usually one or two good songs on the cd, so that's why I download music. If it's an artist who I like then I would buy the whole cd. I'm not CHEAP! So, is there any file-sharing programs worth downloading?

suggest you use google and find a file sharing forum -- as you are going to get squat info here most likely...

That's not completely true. I gave good useful (sort of) info, he just needs to find the magic ports that aren't blocked. Or decifer the meaning of the other post I made. Though chances are the other way would be too much work!

So are they limiting your bandwidth on a timed basis or just blocking ports that P2P apps use. I know the local colleges here block ports so there's usually ways around it. Limiting bandwidth would be awful. No more running game servers over the internet anymore at school

If they're only blocking P2P ports I fail to see how you wouldn't be able to download from an online movie rental site, if that's what you're referring to in some way. Wouldn't those places be hosting on an HTTP port, or if not an FTP port so probably not a blocked port through the school? And I've only heard of places like Netflix that send you the movies to rent for as long as you like for a monthly fee, not an online movie site. Is it some sort of indie movie site or something where people aren't worried about their content being redistributed (royalty free perhaps)? If so I'd like to see it, and so would a lot of others on here.

I only use DirectConnect for P2P anymore, and then only to find cool old foreign films that you can't find here. You have to get into the whole politics of DC hubs though, but once you get in good with one you'll be set.

You never know. It may be true. After all, I may win the lottery, have a flying pet cat, and Jennifer Aniston might leave Brad Pitt and come running to me for sexual pleasure.

Not quite what Leitz said though. They have a monthly fee, but you can't legally keep the movies you watch, only view it from their server.
