  1. I have 3 short VOB files that total 128MB. All 3 clips are DD5.1. Is there any way I can place these files onto a CD-R without losing any video or audio quality and make the CD playable in a standalone DVD player?

For instance, can I author a DVD with my vob files and burn it onto a CD-R (as long as the total size is less than 650MB)? Or can VOB files only be written (and read by a DVD player) from a DVD media?

And bingo was his name oh

Edit, you could write a vob to CD-R, nothing stopping you, but your player wont read it.

  3. "but your player wont read it."

    Some will,it's called a mini-DVD.
Check DVD Player section for compatibility.

    BTW..PowerDVD will play them too.

  5. better to convert them to vcd and burn that. Almost 100% compatibility with standalone dvd players. In fact I have yet to hear of a dvd player that wont play vcd (its part of the dvd specification).
svcd is better quality but about only about 85% compat.
convert with tmpgenc, to vcd (free and good quality).
convert with tmpgenc, to Svcd ($$ and v. good quality).

    why not author a DVD?..
If you read his post he didn't wan't to lose quality.. The DVD will only be playable in a computer, however

Vob files with 5.1 are preserved in the following author apps:
    DVD LAB
    DVD ARCHITECT
    TMPG DVD author

with architect, you just choose a background for the menu
(simply use a black TIF or BMP 720x480)
then drag the three clips onto the "menu page" and CREATE the dvd to the hard drive..
Then burn with the app of choice (Prassi, Nero , Stomp are good for this)
if you use UDF as the file format for the CD when you burn -it might play in some settops -about 2 of 'em-.

  7. He doesn't want to lose quaility but he also wants to play them on his standalone, not on his PC. If you only wanted to play them on his PC why do anything, they're already on his HD after all

Outside of buying a DVDR writer there's not much he can do. Give the cDVD/miniDVD a try thou it might work (minitek et.al.).

  8. Thanks for all the responses. You essentially confirmed what I was thinking: Without a DVD burner I am out of luck.

Or... you could try to rename the .VOBs to .MPG, then make an xSVCD (e.g., in Nero, make an SVCD and turn off standard compliance). Works in my standalones.
