Hi! I just recently watched an SVCD that was taken from a DVD. I didn't make it so I don't know what went into making it. Whenever I make SVCDs, they usually are a little blocky (SOME artifacts) and at times the sound can be pitchy. This SVCD I watched had very good audio and crystal clear picture (not blurry or blocky at all). I normally take the vobs off the dvd and then use dvd2avi to frameserve the vobs to tmpgenc to make a CBR or VBR mpeg2 for SVCD but it's always a little blocky. It's not bad, but other peoples SVCDs I've seen are very clear. What other programs should I use instead?

That's pretty much it. One potential program is are you using forcefilm to create a 23.976fps d2v for leaving it at 29.97fps. You'll get a better quaility encode at 23.976fps. What bitrate are you using (2520kbit/s is the SVCD std and near the max for most standalones).

How do I know what bitrate to use? Also, how do I check what the limits are on my standalone player? I have a sony...

<-- DVD Players
just put in your dvd player
Bit rate, as high as possible to make the MPEG 800MB, if you are using 700MB CD-Rs.
Why 800MB
And I suggest using VBR, its longer to encode, but ther results worth it.Ejoc's CVD Page:

Hmm, sounds like your still leaning the ropes. You should first start to lean the basic requirements of SVCD,
https://www.videohelp.com/svcd
Then review the guides on this site, especially using TMPGenc, and get yourself a good bite rate calculator. I've been using this one,
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/avivcdcalc.html
for about two years now without any problems. Haven't had a chance to try FitCD yet.
For a better idea of what your problem is, you should include some info about your settings on TMPGenc; eg, your bite rate used, any filters, are you using the Wizard or manually setting TMPGenc, etc. -
I just Made a svcd it plays good then the problem starts the sound not in sync half way though the movie. I used dvdx to make it into the svcd is there a better programme out there that i could use (user friendly) OR can some one tell me what i can do in dvdx to help me achive a better quailty movie with the sound insync
