  1. Just got a new pioneer dvr-106d, running winxp pro, when I first install the drive shows up as dma2, but after a few goes defaults to pio ?? I can get it back to dma buy uninstalling and reinstalling but I don't want to do that each day ?? I have a asus a7v333 with raid 0 setup 2 80 gig wd drives 8mb cache, 512mb ddr, xp2400 chip, the pioneer is master on the 1 ide and I have a hitachi dvd as master on the other ide and a 80 gig hard drive as slave to the hitachi drive, Why does this drive default to pio,. plus the best dma I can get it to is dma2 ?? I have purchased this as a replacement for a sony 500ax which was too fussy on what brand of media it would take, my previous sony drive would show as dma 4 the same as my hitachi, and my cyberdrive cdrw that the pioneer is replacing showed as dma4, my 80 gig hard drive shows as dma5, I know there is nothing wrong with my ide leads all are ata133 plus I've swapped them to make sure, my firmware is 1.06 is there an update to solve this problem, plus does anyone else have error as me??? Mant thanks in advance for any help,...

Have you tried forcing it in Device Manager ?

  3. yes, I go to device manager, ide ata/atapi controler, advanced setting, and have set to dma if available, if I take the Pioneer back out and put my cdrw back in it will go straight to ulta dma mode 4 and stay there, so I know there is not a problem with my pc, plus the sony 500ax I had stayed at dma4.

    Cheers for the advice anyway...

n e 1 else had an idea...??? or have the same problem...???

I have an A03. It did not work in DMA mode,
and Pioneer told me so. I t's not a problem
    in PIO mode however.
    Consult Pioneer if possible.

  5. If I burn a dvd-r when dma2 is enabled it takes 15mins for 4.4gig or with pio it takes 30-40mins plus takes up a load of cpu power, if your happy to take pioneers advice then good 4 u , but this is not right !! It should not go back to pio mode all the time.

Cheers for the advice, I know u were just trying to help, but I think pioneer have fobed u off....

If i can't get this drive to stay in dma2 min. then it's going back

This really sounds like a PC problem, I would check and make sure you are using an 80 pin cable and that the cable is OK. I don't know why some manufacturers sell UDMA drives with standard (40 pin) ide cables.

Hi - I've had this problem in the past - it appears to be due to an XP "feature" where any errors on a drive cause XP to reduce the DMA setting - from, say, 5, to 4. If the errors carry on, it'll reduce it to DMA3 and so on, right down to PIO mode, and all without informing you.
The easiest way I've found to resolve this is to delete the ide port in device manager, then do a search for new hardware, and the system should pick up the ide port and the connected drive(s), leaving your Pioneer at whatever DMA setting it's capable of.
The errors could be due to many things - you may find that it doesn't happen again anyhow...

    Wc.

Its the way data is moved in and out of the device.
PIO (Programmed In/Out) requires that the CPU personally
move each word in/out of the device.
DMA (Direct Memory Access) is where a separate DMA controller
acting independently of the CPU does the transfers.

The A03 hardware did not (correctly) supprt DMA transfers.

To check you go to IDE controllers in the device manager

  10. is that why i can only burn a DVD-R at X1? I'm kinda sure that when i first bought it (right when it came out) i could burn at X2.
i've recently upgraded the firmware from the pioneer website and when i see the recorder properties in NERO now, it says that it can burn cd-r at X12 but it only let me choose X4 or X8 when i burn. when i tryto burn a DVD-R at X2 it starts but before it burn anything it says operation failed (the disc is not damaged and then i burn the same project at X1)
    if I wasn't clear i'm using A03. any ideas?

How fast is your computer ?

The A03 had a DMA problem. It took me 3 days to get Pioneer to
admit it. I never try 2 x so it doesn't bother me.
It should work if the computer is fast enough

  12. my spec. is in my first post, as u can c it's quite a good spec, with a xp2400 chip, and 2 80 gig raid 0 setup 8mb, cache, 512 ddr, so should be fast enough ?? I have managed to get the dma back to dma2 and it's been there for about the last 5 dvd burns and touch wood - looks like it's now ok, but still begs the question why did it go to pio to begin with?? Just like to say thanks to all that have helped... Cheers the next pints on me...
