  1. I currently purchased the ADVC-100 to capture some old vhs to my hardrive, I have completed the capturing process and now it is on to conversion.

As the guides on this site have said I am using TMPGenc to do my conversion, with the vbr w/mpeg audio and the noise filter set to 8,1,8 I get an encode time of 41 hrs for a 1.5 hour movie?!?! Is this how it is suppose to be????

    CPU Specs

    AMB Tbred-B 1700 oced to 2100
    ASUS A7n8x Delux
    1026 Corssair Hyper X DDR 3200 Ram
    80g Western Digital HardDrive
Windows XP (Fresh Install) with minimum software installed for capture and encode
    ATI Radeon 9500 Pro

Please let me know what I am doing wrong.

Also are there any commercial programs that will do it faster?

Drop the filters to 40-1-40 (remember the correction does not need to be too great as the MPEG itself and the tv will do some of it for you by its very nature).

Drop the MOTION setting to ESTIMATE instead of HIGH/NORMAL/HIGHEST.

Raise TASK PRIORITY to HIGHEST and disconnect from the Internet (or unplug LAN cable) to avoid interruptions.

Close other programs (including all SYSTEM TRAY programs).

You should have it take no longer than 10 hours at MOST.

I've just completed a 1hr45m encode that took nearly 48 hours to run, so this is probably not untypical if you don't use the suggestions above (plus my computer is not the most up to date). I have to say that the end result was very good, though. Do any of the suggestions have any adverse effect on the quality of the end result?
The future is much like the present, only longer.

  5. TMPGEN just needs the time.

  6. Just a thought, take it or leave it, but might it speed up the overall process to use VirtualDub to clean up the noise and then run TMPGEnc without the noise filter? Or let VirtualDub clean it ap and Frameserve to TMPGEnc?
Just what is this reality thing anyway?

  8. The best place is probably the official website.
    Look here http://www.virtualdub.org/virtualdub_filters
Good luck. I am more and more impressed with this product everytime I use it!

Raise TASK PRIORITY to HIGHEST and disconnect from the Internet (or unplug LAN cable) to avoid interruptions.
That will render a W2K or XP box unstable and unuseable(it has no affect on 98 machines). Never change your task priority above normal. There is no reason to do this(lowering is useful when trying to do other things and encode in the background). Raising to Above Normal will make it difficult to do anything else on your computer, and anything higher will leave your computer locked until (if) it finishes.

Closing down all other applications can help some (like 20 minutes faster on a 48 hour encode). Make sure your virus scanner or disk defragmentor doesn't go off while encoding.

Those TMPGenc filters are probably more than doubling the
    time.

I've done that for more than 2 years now. ME, 98, XP, 2K. You name, it worked, 5 different systems.

That plus enabling the HT on non-HT systems (still improves). Actually turn on most features under CPU and max out the settings. My encodes are now realtime whereas the were 3x or 4x beforehand.

Let the system alone. In fact, I'll start one here in about 10 minutes before I leave for the day. It'll be done in 2 hours, being a 1:50 movie.

Sounds like you've had some bad luck with systems. Sorry it hasn't worked for you.
