I was at Costco this weekend, with my wife, kid, and parents. I had to finish up some things at home, so they went ahead without me and I met them in the store later. The first place I usually look is the electronics section.

Immediately, I noticed 256MB Sandisk CF cards for $48. That's about as cheap as they are online, minus the shipping. I made a mental note to come back, when I buy a digital camera. I looked around a little more, but nothing else caught me eye.

What I really wanted to find was the Maxtor 120Gig hard drives that they had last year. After the stock ran out, I didn't see them in the store. Lo and behold, they started carrying them again! They're $10 more now, at $110, but they come with an IDE controller card. I don't think it's a RAID card, but that still allows me to add at least two more drives, without buying a new card. The only downside is that the drives have a 2MB buffer, but that's just fine.

    Find any good deals recently?

  2. I haven't found any recently, but one great deal I got was a computer case (new, not used) for $5. It was a mid tower with 3 5-1/4 inch bays, and 2 floppy bays. The shop owner had to use the power supply from it for another computer, so he gave me a great deal.

If you don't mind rebates there are some great deals between CompUSA and Best Buy. 256MB USB flash drive for $60, 120GB WD hard drive with 8MB cache for $90, etc.

I like rebates now since by the time I get the rebate check from the last computer item I bought I'm getting ready to buy another thing with a rebate for a similar amount, so it's like the rebates are suspending themselves. Or I just blow the rebate money on something else because I've already paid for the item anyway.

You can get hard drives for around 50 cents a gig with rebates and coupons if you look hard enough. I bought a 120GB for $60 ± and a 160GB for $80 ± just last month from Staples. The trick to getting these low prices is using store coupons on top of rebates...which can be exactly that sometimes - tricky. Try searching Fatwallet, they have a great "Hot Deals" forum.

I tend to avoid rebates, because I'm often a victim of my own laziness or procrastination. If it's not my work and it can be done tomorrow, consider it never done, with me.

Same here, I once forgot to send in a $50 rebate once.
