Wavy Audio from DVDR playback on topset DVD player

I've been burning DVD-/+R's with my Sony DVD +/-R burner using DVD-Lab as the authoring software. The playback on my Toshiba topset and my computer has been excellent.

I took my DVDR's to a friends house the other day and tried playing them on his Panasonic (can't remember the model) and the video playback was fine but the audio was Wavy.

Anyone else experience this or know what the problem could be?

I tried playing a DVDR created by someone else using entirly different software/burner and it played back fine.

I'm having exactly the same problem as you describe with DVD-lab.
When playing dvd made with dvd-lab on my Yamaha S830 - the sound is wavy and not usable at all. When playing the same dvd on my older Pioneer DV-626d player, everything is OK. When the dvd is played on my PC, using Power DVD, everything works perfectly well.

When I play a dvd made with Sonic MyDvd, I don't have any such problems with my Yamaha and everything is just fine.

I was searching the forum to try to find an explanation when I saw your post - guess it could be some setting-problem on my Yamaha, but I haven't been able to find the solution so far. Guess I will have to stay away from using dvd-lab for the time being...

I also brought this up in the DVD-lab forum but no solution has come of it. I'm still having this problem. Please let me know if you find a solution, I will do the same.

Maybe dvd-labs FAQ has the explanation:

I can hear the audio on DVD in a software DVD player (ex. PowerDVD) but not in my standalone DVD player. What is the problem?

It is most likely problem with audio setting in your standalone and using mpeg audio. MPEG audio is not a standard in NTSC but all DVD players now support it. However some DVD players expect to play AC3 or PCM audio as default and for mpeg audio you have to set them to analog or 2 channel mode. Some players can do this automatically without any user interaction.

Don't know if this will solve my problem - but I will definitely have a go at this as soon as I get back home to my dvdplayer (I'm working abroad for the moment). I did have a look at the setup-settings for my Yamaha S830 before I read this FAQ, so I'm not quite sure if this player has the possibility to do analog or 2 channel mode (at least this was not the default settings so my dvdplayer is set to play PCM audio for the time being).

But even if the above remedy should happen to be correct, I still can't quite figure out why dvds made with Sonic's mydvd don't have this problem with the sound....

That is not the problem. The settings in your DVD player are probably fine. If you're having the same problem as me (where the audio cuts in and out during playback), then it has something to do with DVD-lab and using PCM audio on certain DVD-players.

you were right; the available settings on my Yamaha S830 can't make the wavy sound on my recorded dvd made with dvd-lab go away. On the other hand, I'm not sure that I have the possibility to set "analog or 2 channel mode" like dvdlab's FAQ says I should do. I only have the option to set PCM sound or bitstream - as far as I remember.

Unfortunately, I don't have too much time to spend on this problem - so the most likely option for me is to forget about dvd-lab for the time being. Pity though, dvdlab seems like a nice authoring program - if I only could get it to work

For me, it's not that big of a problem since the DVD's from DVD-lab play fine on my Toshiba. I just noticed the problem on my friends Pansonic.

If you figure out what the problem *please* e-mail me and let me know. I really want to get this fixed but will continue making DVD's in the meantime. I will just re-author them once a fix is in place. Also, if you find an authoring software that is as good as DVD-lab (motion menu's and text links) and uses PCM audio well...please let me know what it is.
