I just came accross a deal on DVD-Rs from a company called E3 Works. Are these any good? Someone told me CMC produced them. In other words tread carefully.

They didn't work with my NEC-1300a so I returned them. Check around a similar question was asked within the last few days.

  4. gll99: You might want to try the hacked firmware at herrie.rpc1.org. I used it in my TDK 440N (a repackaged NEC-1300) and it supports the discs you mentioned (leaddata01). It also supports AN31 discs which are dirt cheap and playback very well in everything I've tried.

Thanks gll99. If they burn at 4X in my Pioneer 105. They may be a decent deal. I can get Princo's cheaper, but they burn at 1x. I can get LongTen even cheaper than that, but I wouldn't touch them again for half price.

    Thanks for the info.
Those hacked firmware pages don't give much detail on the benefits of particular hacks. I'm waiting for one that will allow a multi format drive update to the book type. I haven't found one yet that does that. I bought 24 (8x3 packs) of Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x at a great price and I do a lot of testing and stuff with those. I have about 30 DVD-R 2x on hand and that's plenty for now until I am satisfied with my DVD Video backup skills. Although I've made many (x)(s)vcd's over the years I'm just getting started with straight dvd backups and also reauthoring with my own menus. Although conversions and encoding are much the same, new tools are needed for authoring and there is a learning curve.
I had bought the 25 pack 4x discs because the price was so good but didn't want to update the firmware just to see if they would work since what I have now works fine. Why upset the apple cart unless it is to my advantage.

That's why I'm still waiting and looking.

Actually it's for my DVD+RW discs which play fine on my Apex AD700 but won't play on my Apex AD600. I read somewhere that if I change the book type on the dvd+rw to dvd-rom then it will accept them. Unfortunately as I found out and as you said they don't have that feature in my current firmware version nor are any available with this option. I will probably wait to update the firmware, if and when such an uprade is available for my writer.

    ps. ROBERT BLACK:
I also recall that those 4x disc had the word "Pearl" something or other in the name.

  9. If its only about the rewriteable then format them and try to find a Ricoh type burner to change the booktype.

I think they will keep that setting.

Tx for the tip. If they keep the setting that would be all I need.
