I've heard people say, putting a sticky label on your DVD affects how it plays, is that true??? or is it just a matter of opinion?

I do, I've ruined CDs with labels before little less more picky DVDs.

Some standalone players won't play discs with stickers - and states so in the manual that came with some.
That could cause you you trouble somewhere down the road, if you ever have to replace or upgrade your player.
You also wouldn't be able to share some of your discs with friends if they own one of the players that can't read through sticker labels.
Might not be that big a deal if you don't mind making extra copies without labels. -
Well, Rookie64 is right, some player are very picky and some of your labeld dvds will start skiping or even give you error message in those picky dvds, but i guees all new players will handel those labeld dvds just fine. However my sony and Philips plays all my labeld dvds.

i would just like to no if you have tried the disks with labels on and a disk with labels of in the same player because how could you no it was down to the label as ive never had one do it and i put labels on all of my backups

The obvious answer is that some people experience problems, some don't. If you really want to know if it will work for you, you have to experiment. I play it safe, since changing DVD players shouldn't invalidate your entire DVDR collection. But hey, if it works on your player live life on the wild side: label your discs!

Afraid so. I had gotten to the point where all labeled videos would not work, and all my unlabeled would. Yes, we know there are people who have labeled disks all there lives without a hitch, we are just saying for some of us, it was a disaster, so use full labels at your own risks.
Hello. -
No problems at all from labeling hundreds of CD's and DVD's I've burned. For write-once media, I use a Sharpie. No problems for playback in over a dozen different systems I use (e.g. computers, SA DVD players, car DVD player, car CD players, portable CD players, etc.). For rewritable media, I use a Brother TZ labeler to make a filament label. No problems with any player, no problems with peeling, despite living in Phoenix with 115 deg. F summer heat. No problems on any media I use, including Memorex, TDK, Fuji, Ritek, for both CD's and DVD's.

Sharpie user here, was thinking of using labels but after reading horror stories on this forum I changed my mind.Besides I don't care how the disk looks, the only time I see it is when I take it from the jewel case to the player and vice-versa.

I've never had any problems with labels movies that I use on stand alone DVD players. I did have a few skipping issues with labeled DVD-Rs on my PS2. So, I label movies for DVD player and use media pen on anything that might be used on the PS2.

I read where some said that if the label was applied a little off center it would introduce wobble and cause the DVD not to play. As an experiment I cut a label in half and applied it to a DVD. It played fine all the way through a two hour movie.
That certainly doesn't answer the question of wether or not labels can or will cause trouble. I'm sure the label glue can't last forever.
Still my DVD collection is so much easier to browse with labels so I use them. No trouble yet.
I use center core labels on my home movies just in case. -
I use sharpie to write on the disc.
Labels are just wild cards. they may or may not demage the discs.
I guess it is a matter of luck. I have cd's recorded 3 years ago and they all play fine, even my picky car radio plays them.
Besides, if the labels are not properly applied they can cause balance problems when we play the discs. That's enough to have a faulty dvd.
If sharpie + cd = right combination then I stick to sharpie + dvd+/-R till I get sthg better -

As for balance when applying a single label, with the Brother TZ tape labels that I use, I never make any attempt to balance the disc by putting a label on the opposite side. Never had a problem with any DVD+/- R or RW that I've created from a dozen suppliers, with playback in about a dozen different DVD systems.
Also, never had a problem with a disc where I've peeled off a TZ label, burned new material to it, and re-labeled. I do this regularly with my RW discs, where I record material for the kids (e.g. eight to ten 30-minute cartoon shows). If you've never tried the Brother TZ labeler, take a look at it. Lots of options on what you can put on the label, excellent adhesion, and nearly weightless. -

Have you guys looked at this? http://www.casio.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=products.detail&Product=CW-50
Saw this at Staples. Found it online for $84. Prints on any CD surface (not just printable discs). Only downside is it only prints in 1 color and are limited to the space on the disc to print on. But sure looks better than my handwriting. -

I haven't had any problems. However, I suggest staying away from the DVD's that only have a silver coating on the back, they can be easily scratched. If you put them up to the light you can actually see thru them. This might be why labels corrupt them. The new Riteks now have an additional coating with no additional cost.

I have 96 totally ruined CDR's from a CD holder. Yep, you know the black case with sleeves for your CD/DVD's? Seems the liner was made from an acetone solvent, and not very well. So, every disk has acetone pits and glue spots.
A blank disk in a jewel case is 'safe', but don't hold your breath with anything that involves a solvent. To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Labels are like Craps: It's a roll of the dice each time you use one. I have made hundreds of DVDs both with and without labels. The unlabeled disks have had a zero failure rate where as labeled DVDs have been about a one in 50.
I use Ritek media exclusively but have tried a couple of different types of labels. The label with the lowest failure rate for me has been the Memorex high gloss. That is until about three months ago. I began getting Memorex labels with a different gloss level and the adhesive was different. Almost all of these caused my media to fail. They are almost impossible to apply without getting bubbles and do not take the ink from my Canon i850 very well. Upon contacting Memorex I found that there are two suppliers for these labels who apparently use different manufacturing methods. Memorex acknowledged this was a know problem they were working to correct but as of yet had not been able to.
Side note: It is impossible to identify with labels will cause problems without opening the package. Once open if the template has BLUE instruction type these are the BAD labels.
Then again this is just my experience. Props to anyone who can label with no issues, but experience tells me that labeling increases the chance for failure. -
