I'm recording DVD-R in a standalone DVD Recorder (Panasonic DMR-E30) and copying VOBs and VROs to the HDD. Then I import those to DVD Author. I also add some AVIs encoded in TMPGEnc for the menus. Sometimes I have to trim the clips, and I'd like to listen to the audio, but it's just not there.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but is DVD Author's chapter cut edit mute? Is there a way you can preview the clips with audio in DVD Author? Or is there an alternative splitter I can use for VOB and mpg2 with complete preview (audio + video)? I tried cutting VOBs in TMPGEnc's MPEG Tools but the output is a video file with no audio. I have Virtual Dub Mod installed but you can't make a direct stream copy to vob or mpg2, and save as MPG, or can you?

If you are using the original audio recorded with the video from the panasonic standalone it will not preview the audio in TMPGEnc DVD Author as the e30 records the audio in DD ac3. but the upside is when you do author your dvd & burn back to dvdr you will have DD ac3. I also have an e30 and i feel the missing audio preview is no big deal as i would rather keep the audio as DD ac3 without having to go through a bunch of other encoding steps. but the audio from the menus you make should show up in the preview if they were made with TMPGEnc .
