I can capture at VCD quality and burn a VCD to play on my TV and, it's not
bad, considering the source.
Would I notice any difference if I captured at DVD quality and burned a DVD
of the same material?
I don't have a DVD burner yet, so just wondering.

Probably, but it will never look better than the source. Unless you are a wizard with filtering, then you may get a tiny bit of improvement over the source.

The VCD standard is also legal for use on a DVD. So if you are statisfied with the VCD quality, you now can put LOTS of video on a DVD instead of "boosting" the resolution etc. If you are capturing from an analouge source... I'd think you'd get along just finde with VCD. Please note that XVCD is NOT legal, only the strict VCD standard (Red book??)

no, up to 1.8mbps is supported with MPEG1 on DVD, so higher than 1.15 for VCD. also, the sound must be sample at 48khz instead of 44.1khz.

Ditto to the LaserDisc-King.
And, for the record:
White Book v1.0 - Karaoke VCD
White Book v1.1 - VCD
White Book v2.0 - VCD w/PBC
White Book v0.9 - SVCD
(Glad to see Philips can count in the right direction! :P) -

I can make pretty good VCDs with my setup. Good enough that unless it's a show I REALLY like, I just make a VCD of it.
My favorite format is 1/2 D1, though. But VCD is still pretty good.
