Ok having some cropping problems here. I mentioned it in my last post and have got this far with help, but now I'm stuck again. I using VirtualDub to get rid of a fuzzy line that appears in one of my avi's.

So I did Open file-> Selected my avi then->video->filters then I selected->null trasformer from the list and cropped my avi.

Here is where the problem begins. I try to save it as a avi (which it is) and it says the file is being used. Then it said something about recompress. Here is the exact instructions and text:

That's it! When you resave the video in VirtualDub the newly saved video will be cropped. But don't forget that you need to recompress again when you save it or it won't work.
So what I'm a doing wrong? Any help would be great thanks!

Try saving the file under a different file name.

I must say VirtualDub is very easy to use don't know why I'm having the problems I'm having lol. Thanks again!

You recompress by selecting Video-->Normal Recompress.

weird but I did video->normal recompress and saved it as a avi and renamed it as a diffrent file name but it wants to save and recompress the un-cropped one again for some reason.

Then I noticed that while it was recompressing my hard drive started to fill up fast lol but I can't recompress and do a streaming at the same time so I'm at a loss..

Hey Foo! Simple, like I mentioned above in my first post to get rid a fuzzy line that appears at the bottom of one of my avi files. While I was cropping it it looked great! And if I can just get past the save a recompress I know it will work lol. See the above post on the problem Foo.

Ok I have the main window with un-uncropped avi and right next to it is the cropped one that I made and it looks great! I went frame by frame and was pleased with it.

Now I do a normal recompress like I was told and save it as a avi with a new file name and it wants to keep saving the original (the un-cropped one) I just don't get it.

When I asked what are you trying to do I meant
what is your intended final result.

My ending result would be to have the blurry line to be out of the bottom of my avi cropping would solve this.

So your end result is to have an AVI file on your computer.

Lol Foo I think your missing the point. I already have a movie I saved as a avi, but I noticed there was a blurry line down below it and it bugs me lol just want to crop it and get rid of it!

Like I said in my above post. I went through all that just stuck on saving and recomprossing. It's odd but it keeps saving the non-cropped one.

I hope this cleared it up take it easy Foo!

I was getting around to saying that if you are making a DVD
TMPGenc will crop while encoding, thus saving a step.
I don't understand however, why you can't just save
an AVI from Vdub as whatever you want. I never do that.
I always frameserve to something else.

OK I tried it (sort of)
open random file. crop . save as AVI
no problem (except the aspect ratio is now screwed)

O I see looks like TMPGenc would solve my problems Foo! But you have to remember I'm new at this so that why I'm asking for help. I still don't know how to use all of VirtualDub 's functions. So what do u mean by frameserve to something else? Yeah and I agree with u I should not have to save it as something else. So after I cropped it and save it as avi again its says file is in use and therfore I have to change the file name and set it to normal recompress and what it saves is my un-cropped one I just wish I knew why?

Thanks again Foo Maybe I will use the other program I just feel comfortable with VirtualDub now lol.

And remember, Virtual Dub can do subtitles as well as capture. I do suggest you look into frameserving as it combines the power of both programs.

Almost NO video programs will overwrite the source
    as in MS word.

If you cant open xxx.avi in Vdub and save as xxx2.avi
there is a serious problem somewhere. Maybe you can,
but the output file is the same. is that it ?

Next time try video-> Full Processing Mode.
I seem to remember if you don't do that it doesn't run the filters.

You will run into this later but you MAY not want to crop because
the vertical size will be non standard. You may want to paint black
over the bottom instead. TMPGenc will do that

If I were going to run TMPGEnc, I would go ahead and crop it.
    Hello.

  20. As stated, you cannot save an edited file with the same name as the original while you have it open. That's fairly simple.

Also as stated, if you are not set to "Full Processing Mode" then the filters are ignored. Vdub is not saving your original file, it is creating a new one exactly as you directed. Which means, if not in Full Processing Mode, to ignore all filters thereby giving a result which is identical to the original.

You could use Crop and Add Borders to retain compliant specs and aspect ratio, or you could frameserve the file as filtered, or you could just open in TmpGenc and crop while encoding.

So where is Crop and add borders ?
    Is that a plugin ?
Fill works and seems to be an internal filter

  22. I may have used the wrong name, but the add borders function is in the crop box, in Vdub, you fill in the intended size and specify black for the borders.

My encoding machine is busy, got free premium cable for 30 days and am capping my buns off. So I couldn't look it up.

I guess I have an old version or something, I can't
find anything but crop in the crop box

  24. I'm sorry, it's on the the resize filter, under "expand frame and letterbox image". In this case, you would have to crop first and then add borders.

    OK thanks I found it.

It would seem that to achieve the same effect as painting
black on the edge of a movie one would have to run the Null filter and crop
and then run the Resize without changing size and add borders the same
    amount as the crop.

Looks like Fill does it in one step.

No I'm NOT going to do it both ways and time it.

Edit: I just said what you already said, guess I can't read
