OK people.
LOTR: TT just came out. I want to make a backup of mine but I was wondering, since the movie is so long, which method you guys are using to back it up.
I would prefer to keep it all on one disc.
Which program maintains the best quality?

THIS has been an RVL123 production...

rvl123,
this iswhat i am doing right now...i am using DVD2DVDR with CCE for best results's my post question here is how much pass should i put?
im thinking more on 4-5 pass (i dont care about time)
this method will give you the best results!!
as you saw the original DVD quality is amazing!! and i wanna keep it like that!! -
DVDXCOPY or DVDlab split it it will be a 1:1 copy dvdlab is free by the way IC7 is very good you can use dvdrshrink to take the movie out and then use IC7 to encode

What about the bonus disc?
What's the best way to back that up
to 2 DVD-R with all the menus included?
The bonus disc is also dual-layer
with lots of little movies between
300 to 2,000 megabytes each. -
Have you tried dvdfab for the main movie disc?
http://encoding.n3.net <-- for all your DVD and CD backup needs! -
Two Towers is around 7.8GB movie - no matter what you do with it you are going to be losing lots of quality to put it onto a dvd-r. The best idea, if you have to make a copy, would be to split the movie. That way you might only need minimal transcode.
Personally, my primary archival copy will be 2 disc with a single disc copy to be used when someone that isn't interested in quality wants to watch a three hour movie (kids and lamer inlaws). I bought the set, I'm making as many archival copies as I think I need.

Is there any way to get the effect of DVDXCOPY / DVDFAB
where a "change graphic" will ask me to insert disc 2? -
RE: Bonus Disc
I've tried DVD Fab on similar discs (similar to this bonus disc)
where there is no main movie but instead just a dozen or so small
movies. DVD Fab gets confused and thinks the largest small
movie is the main movie. The problem is, DVD Fab splits this one
small movie and expects all the other smaller movies will fit
in the Second Disc. When the Output Disc 1 and Disc 2
are created, one of the Discs (almost always disc 2) ends
up being well over 4.34 Gig.
This problem also ocurred an older version of DVDXCOPY
that I tried.
Anyone else have this problem? -
This disc IS my backup copy. When the extended version comes out in November, the only reason to bust this one out is when the little kiddiez wanna see some orcs get smooshed... or when we want to watch the extras.

Best to copy to 2 dvdr's. ive tried both methods, copying to 1 and 2 dvds. (used dvdrw disc for this purpose so i can erase them later) there is quality loss if the movie is to be on one disc. you can only store 2 hours of the main movie on a single dvd at standard quality.
The bonus disc is worth compressing (in my opinion) and burning to 1 dvd.
i use to own the original movie but have sold it as im going to get the extended version 4 disc set when its out in november. (my lotr copy is on rewritable disc and will be erased when i get the extended version)
Why cant they release both normal and extended versions at the same time. i hate having to wait... -

Hmm...
I just ended up splitting it to 2 discs using DVDShrink Re-author.
I kinda wanted the menu (it's pretty cool :P ). But, you win some, you lose some. Since there arent any bonuses on that disc, it didnt really matter.
DVDShrink is pretty good, but how does the compresssion compare to DVD2One?
Thanks!THIS has been an RVL123 production... -

This might only apply to the UK disk but...
When I tried transcoding LOTR TT with XMPEG or Super DVD Ripper, I lost the subtitles for the scenes where characters are speaking in Elvish. Anyone got any how to maintain those subs without get subs all the way through the film? -
Read this SVCD guide:
http://www.mpegit.net/eng_svcd.php
And use the same method (OPV) for CCE... I will do the DVDR guide soon... -
I've already posted in an almost identical LOTR TT thread and stand by my opinion 100% - transcoders are all crap at producing a decent quality movie that is three hours long - especially a high motion movies such as the TT.
The ONLY way to go here (on a single disc this is) is to re-encode with a decent number of passes (I did 4) - to allocate the bitrate to the correct scenes - high as possible for battle scenes and as low as you can go for the static screens.
On the subtitle question in this thread - you MUST include the two subtitle streams (they switch halfway through the movies to catch you out) - the FORCED subs should be picked up by your Authoring package. I used IfoEdit and they work a treat.
In summary ..
DVDDecrypter
DVD2SVCD (with DVD Settings)
CCE 2.5 (4pass - 3 pass should still be ok..)
VobSub + Sub2Sub to convert the Subtitles to InoEdit format
IfoEdit to Author
ImgTool to Image (guaranteed to play in a DVD player 100% )
RecordNox MAx to burn on RITEK media.
Sorted... -

have to disagree there adder - my bitrates on 1 pass OPV vs 4 pass are NOT the same - not a HUGE difference I must confess - but the quality differences are there.
As always - if you're happy with OPV then fine - I'm not.

OK - I'm happy to listen to your opinions and I will try the OPV tonight - perhaps I did it wrong when I last tried ...
