  1. I'm new to this and searched the forums. I want to capture from MiniDV using Ulead VideoStudio and the end result is a SVCD. Do I capture as SVCD, DV or MPEG?

If you mean from a MiniDV camcorder, you have to feed the signal to your computer thru the 1394 as either DV or AVI. Once the video is in your computer the Ulead program should convert the video afterwards into SVCD Mpeg 2. If you don't have 1394 inputs, then you'll need either a Video card with inputs or a special Analog to digital converter and a 1394/card installed. If you mean a MiniDV disc, it's pretty much the same way. The signal normally has to go in as either DV or AVI 1st, unless you have another special converter that will convert on the fly.

You need to give slightly better details when you post a question. Ulead Movie studio has multiple versions and if you want a completed SVCD, you'll have to download their free 30 day trial of DVD MovieFactory. The Ulead movie studio may have mpeg 2 conversions but how good they operate may depend on which version of MovieStudio you have and if it came with a 'bundled' software package or if you bought it separately.

  4. appoligise for asking a question that may already be answered, but i have search all over to no availl; maybe coz its so simple

i am gettign a minDV camcorder tmw and after being very comfortable with capturing from an analogue camcorder with a capture card i need to know how DV 'capturing' works

what software choices do i have to capture the DV video stream ??

a customers camera here uses software that outputs .mov files onto the Hard Disk
NOT at all what i want.

a huffy would be good, but is software limited to the brand of camera ??

as you can probably tell from my post i am a bit lost on DV

    thanx

DaveQB, you are not a newcomer to dvdrhelp.com so I am surprised you do not realise it is not acceptable to hijack another posters thread. If you have questions that you can't find the answer to, please create a new topic.

When you 'capture' DV, it is not captured in the traditional sense. The digital DV data is 'copied' from the tape, usually via firewire, and stored on the PC in an avi wrapper. Some applications will encode this to another format (often mpeg-1 or 2) 'on the fly' (i.e, as it is being captured) so the user never actually gets to see the avi file. Apps that do this frequesntly do not provide the best possible quality result. For best quality, capture as a DV Avi and use an external encoder such as Tmpgenc, mainconcept or CCE to convert the avi to the appropriate mpeg standard ((S)VCD or DVD).

    Hope this helps.

  7. yeah i figured it wasnt 'captured' and its just a simple data transfer.

so what apps are available ??
i mean are you stuck with the app that comes with your camcorder ??
i dont see alot of 'open source' GPL type apps that are for DV

i would rather have my files in an avi wrapper or ogm/mkv in a lossless codec and not somehting like quicktime ( )
