    Would it be legal to make a backup of a rented DVD if you owned the original movie on VHS? I would do a copy of the movie only, no extras. I would like to convert my VHS tapes to DVD, but the quality would be better and it would be easier to just copy a DVD.

    Possibly, but I dont think so.

    As far as I am aware you can backup a VHS to VHS or a DVD to a DVD.

    Lawyers make big bucks to answer questions like this. This is not a legal forum. Don't take any answers that you get here as being legal gospel.

    Technically, it is illegal to decrypt and copy any DVDs that have copy protection. There are some who argue that it should be legal to copy DVDs that you own, regardless of copy protection. It remains to be seen if these arguments will hold up in a court of law.
    Technically, you could probably copy your VHS tape to DVD, but not rent the same movie on DVD and copy it to another DVD. That would be illegal.

    If you would like to hire a lawyer and become a test case, I would be happy to closely follow your struggles in the news.
