my question is,
will an SVCD in vbr play/be just as compatible on a stand-alone dvd player as cbr encoded?
space is an issue, so I would prefer vbr (for quality), but compatibility is #1 at this point...
I have a Samsung DVD S222, and an Apex 1200... and for others/families players?...
any and all help/advice would be much appreciated...

VBR is legal for SVCD but some players have trouble if the bitrate is too high or low, even if it is within SVCD specs. Keep the minimum to 300 Kbps (or higher, padding enabled) and the maximum to 2500 Kbps (or lower, 2750 total audio + video) to ensure widespread compatibility.
