  1. i have been reading around the site, and i heard about one slight pause during playback of commercial dvds and backed up dvds.

i dont think i have ever seen a pause when playing commercial dvds on my apex ad-703, xbox, and pc dvd-rom drive.

i am getting a dvd-rw drive soon, and i already have dvd shrink 2.3, instant copy, and dvdxcopy xpress installed.

do any of those programs remove layer breaks before burning to dvd-r?

is there a slight pause when u guys play your dvd backups?

    thanks

    I wouldnt worry about it.
You have to look very hard to notice it on a commercial DVD.
All it is, is a slight stutter when it goes between layer 1 and layer 2.

As far as i am aware you shouldnt see anything on a copy as there are no layers, but I am sure that someone else will be able to confirm or deny this.

Correct. All current (and possibly future) DVD burners and related media are single layer, so there is no Layer break.

Of course this means that many, dual layer commercial DVD's need to be 'shrunk' to fit on a single layer DVDr disk for backup purposes.

Yeah every once in a while someone like... err... umm... *cough*vance*cough* comes in saying that the Layer Break is a real entity, encoded on the disk (presumably with marked errors or some crap), and that no burning proggy gets rid of it.

The truth is that the "layer break pause" is a PHYSICAL manifestation, caused when the laser refocuses onto the second layer.

Once the data is on your hard disk, there are no layers... just a big long movie. As such, any layer break pause is now gone.

Wanna verify this? Pop in a movie with a really obvious layer change pause in a nasty place. Rip it to your hard disk, play up to that point with PowerDVD, and see if it still pauses.
