Capturing and removing comercials without tv turner card

Capturing by hardware and editing, removing commercials, without tv turner card.
Capture from any hardware with turner inside an video line out like whs DVB satellite or terrestrial, direct to mpeg2 by harware. Basic editing without reencoding removing commercials or undesired parts.

What do you need
Hardware:
Avermedia dvd ezmaker pci gold or pro (mpeg2 by hardware)
One (old) vhs videorecorder (or DBV satellite receiver)
Software:
Neotv, virtualdub mpeg2, tmpgenc dvdauthor, (optional) Nero Recode

First you connect your vhs (line out in the back) with the capture card with rca cable (to composite) and the line in of the sound card (adaptor of minijack if necessary). Select in the video the tv channel you want.
Open Neotv, in input select avermedia, composite and line in. In ouput mpeg2 and sp quality (4gb for 3 hours) and the directory for the file. Open the scheduler select hours of open and close or your program.

Afther, you have one excellent mpeg2 by hardware. Open virtualdub and select the file. Now you can see the entire program with great accuracy and without hangs. You can make a quick tour with the cursor and select the times of the begin and end of the desired parts of your program you want to keep.

Close virtualdub. Open dvdauthor, new project, select the file, edit. Your mpeg2 is compatible. Move the cursor till the first appointed time, you can see the time and also the thumbnails por a perfect cut. Set the desired thumbnail as the start frame, move the cursor till the end of the first part of your program and set the thumbnail as end frame and click ok. Add file (the same), now you put your news first and end frame for the second part. Add so many files how desired parts you want to keep. Click begin ouput. Afher a few minutes you have your dvd files in one directory.

If you want keep your files with less space Nero Recode can transform in mp4 the directory of dvdauthor with great quality.

I have one of those - a Pinnacle DC10+ that captures in native MJPEG format. For a while I used to route the output from my cable box to this card and record shows. Then I would edit the ads out with Virtualdub (had to install a MJPEG codec like PicVideo or Morgan for Virtualdub to be able to open the files) and then convert to MPEG2 using tmpgenc.

Worked pretty well. Now I use a Hauppauge PVR250 but not the tuner part since I record directly from the cable box so the audio/video from the cable box goes directly to the card

Stereo?
It depends of your source, DVB terrestrial or satellite are certanly stereo, also the newest vhs.
The first purpose of Avermedia card wasn’t capture tv but once you have.. is a far cheaper solution than tv’s card with mpeg2 capture by hardware like Hauppauge and you can use other sources like DVB. Also much better than capturing in avi and later transform.
I choose NeoTv because recognizes the card and left works by hardware. Nero also works but the capture was made by his own soft mpeg2 by software and that is nonsense with this good card.
You don’t need reencode with Tmpgenc, jus take note of the times with Virtualdub mpeg2 and edit directly in Dvdauthor. You don’t need also the new mpeg2 editor of Tmpgenc.
The utilities of this type of card depends of your needs. There is no easy way of transform one Powerpoint presentation with music in avi or dv. Before we use one digital camera with line in now Avermedia.

Um...NeoTV does hardware? It's a piece of software, with a software encoder...I just don't get it, sorry.
I suppose if NeoTV does as advertised, it's worth the $30. Their site says it will work with a P3 and Win98, but they only support 15 cards, and they even mention that it hasn't been tested on other cards, but "should" work with WDM drivers.
It is a nice cheap solution though

The only reason I use it is for the scheduler, you don’t have to wait for the begining and end of your program manually. Also lefts the card capturing by hardware mpge2. That is not mistery at all because NeoTv belongs to mediostream wich is the author of the (limited ) software neodvdstandard4 wich comes with the card. So the interface is the same. It’s true that you have only 3 basic resolutions, but for capturing from vhs it is enough. Before I used the pass through the analogue line in of digital Sony camera. That take a lot of space and time. You have to stop every 15 minutes for the 4GB file limit of Windows 98 and the quality is the same because the resolution of the source vhs-c or video8 is very limited in number of lines in relation to mpeg2.
What I am talking is about my experience. Can you used the tuner of your vhs for capturing tv ?. Yes. DVB terrestrial or satellite ? Yes. An also vituadbub and dvdauthor for basic editing.
I explain how to in my experince if it could be useful for someone, I don’t konw if that is a guide or not. This site is about interchanging experiences several questions posted are related and my opinion is based in facts.

Only the Avermedia dvd ezmaker pci pro card does hardware assisted mpeg2 encoding. The regular card uses software like neodvd and neotv.

I agree with you about the scheduler. I like Neodvd but usually at the highest "best" setting. I use the fit to disk option available only in Neotv quite often with my dvd/rw since it maximizes space, time and quality without a disc underuse or overrun. You don't need a hardware card to use this app. I tested 3 basic bt878/879 cards. A generic Pine bt878, an ATI TV Wonder pci and the Avermedia tv98 and they all used about the same between 40 to 60% of the cpu at various times during capture and writing to disc on my P4 1.6 oc'd at 2.2.

Where you lost me is after you cut the mpeg2 in virtualdubmod mpeg2. You just closed the app how did you save the output and in what format?

He didn't. He uses vdubmod to get the times for cutting in TDA. (have a paper and pen handy)

I explained bad myself in my poor english. Afther you have your program recorded in your mpeg2 file you open it with Virtualdub mpeg2 ( is one version of Virtualdub with mpeg2 filter wich allowed open this kind of file) and with the cursor you make a visual tour in the file, and you take note of the times in one notepad where the desired parts of your program you want to keep begins and end, but without edit .
Below the cursor Virtualdub says the time in minutes and seconds of each image. Thats the utility of Virtualdub in this case you can see easily the entire program and what you want to keep. In other programs that is difficult you can have hangs or is not easy to see the complete images at full speed and stop in any moment.
Once you have your notes you close Virtualdub. We are going to edit directly in Dvdauthor, in the final dvd without reencoding.
For that we open a new project and we add the mpeg2 file and edit it (chapter cut edit). In this file we are going to left the first portion of the mpeg2 we want to keep. We find with the cursor the first time of the notepad (we have also tubnails and time in dvdauthor for a perfect cut) and says to Dvdauthor set as start frame, and the final time of the notepad first part, as end frame and ok.
Now we have our first part. We are going to join the second.
We says to Dvdauthor add file (the same full mpeg2 file) and chapter cut edit with a news start and end frame (the second part we want to keep) and so on. At the end we have the same file added several times in Dvdauthor but with differents start and end frames, so our program is perfect and Dvdauthor makes your dvd without reencoding.
Even if is bigger than the normal capacity of one dvd your can ignore the warnings and later reencode, this time yes, with Dvdshrink.
