Be careful about codec packs, they might screw up things in your computer. I recommend Divx Pro 5.xx, which pretty much take care of almost all DivX formats, 3ivx for Xvid and other DivX stuff, and PowerDVD for MPEG1/2 and as an excellent all-around media player . That will have all your bases covered. You don't need any freaking codec packs and install codec only when you need it. Maybe you also need QuickTime and Real player installed for MOV and RM files. That's all I can think of now. I already lost count of codecs in my computer :P

Hear, hear. There's no such thing as a decent codec pack. Only on a box with no codecs at all, a well written/assembled pack might work without causing severe headache.
If a certain file wont play, use GSpot to tell you what codecs is needed, then download and install this/these. Pretty soon, your box will be equipped to play 99.999% of all AVIs out there.
