  1. I have been capturing for some time now with an Analog capture card and getting mixed results. Generally very good but not as good as the orginal Hi8 tape or VHS.

Now I have borrowed a Digital 8 DV Camcorder and I've been capturing my Hi8 tapes through the DV port. (I've got Excellent Results).

My question is this which of the following gives the best result. my aim is convert to DVD.

    1) Playing through the PASSthrough feature of a Sony DV Digital Camcorder.

    2) Buying a ADVC-50 which looks like it also will convert the analog signal to DV.

    or

    3) Buying a standard desktop Panasonic DVD Recorder and just play my tapes into it.

    Many Thanks
    In Advance.

  2. You will get similar results, it's a question of preference. The advantage of the Digital camcorder is that it also films (and captures if you have passthrough)! The Canopus ADVC-50 is also a good choice. Although the ADVC-100 is more versatile and is considered a better choice. A DVD recorder is the quickest and the least toublesome of these options but it offers less flexibility for editing and authoring the DVD. I choose a digital camcorder with passthrough because I wanted a digital camcorder but eventually, I will buy a DVD recorder.

P.S. In North America, the Sony TRV-250 does NOT have passthrough but the TRV-350 does have it. So be careful when you buy.
