  1. I just bought a DVD movie for my kid's birthday. He can't reach my standalone Sony DVP-400N player, nor do I want him touching it. I wanted to make a copy of it to a VHS tape which he is allowed to operate on his own, but when I hooked up my outputs of the DVD player to the VCR and recorded it, the picture faded in and out, obviously copy protected. My question is, does anyone know of a way to get around this? All I want to do is make copies of my own dvd movies so my kids can play them on their own.

    Thanks...

  3. Radioshack does sell some kind of de-macrovision device allowing to record VHS tape from DVD player.

  4. It's called an RF Modulator and it disables macrovision. It was actually designed for those that don't have the proper tv connections and need to connect their dvd players through a VCR. The picture isn't nearly as nice, but it works.

    Monster,
I'm sure this isn't something you haven't already thought of, but I'll through it out there anyway. Have you considered buying a second dvd player that has macrovision disabled capability(most are inexpensive compared to your Sony)and using it solely for the purpose of making copies for your child? I have a Toshiba 5 disc changer that I use for main viewing and a Sampo DVE-620 which I use mainly to watch my region 2 dvds, but occasionally make vhs copies for my nephew. The Sampo only cost $139 at the time, but if you check the players rated at this site I'm sure you could find one at a favorable price.
I know this doesn't answer your question, but I had the same quandry and this is what i did to resolve it. For what it's worth, I am glad I did it.

  6. Well I appreciate everyone's input. Although I understand why I can't copy my dvd, I think it is a shame I can't even backup my own purchased dvd movie. I do have a solution for myself. I own a Dazzle DVC II capture card and PC dvd player. I'm going to rip the dvd's vob file (using one of the great software rippers found on this site for free) onto my pc and convert them to a mpeg. With my Dazzle card I can output it to my vcr. Problem solved, take that for copyright protection, huh!

  7. You could also try a Sima CopyMaster. They are sold at BestBuy for $49 and I think I saw them at Circuit City for $39. I have one and have no problems doing any backups to tape. Its placed between the DVD player and the VCR.

  8. Ok next, good idea as well. I have a friend that bought the Sima and he can copy anything to vhs. I might consider that for the long run.
