  1. I have spent a lot of money and time finding a dvd-r disc that is compatible with my Toshiba Sdr-5002 dvd burner and my home dvd player Alba dvd -103.The compatible disc is a 'White swirl'disc using Princo dye. But discs I created 3 months ago will not now play on my Alba dvd player. They will all play on my Three dvd-rom drives and on a friends dvd player he bought in Tesco's ( I don't know the model off-hand but it was very cheap ). However, these discs are still playing on my dvd player soon after burning them, it seems that as time passes that the problem occurs.I would assume that the discs are breaking down but how is it that they will still play on other drives. Has anybody else experienced this and if so should should I abandon this disc for something else. I have tried a lot of makes and Ritek dye is a definite non-runner. I would be happy to learn that a new stand alone player would solve the problem but if these discs are known to break down then I will have to try something else. Any help would greatly appreciated.

  2. Princo is unfortunately the culprit. Their media for the most part is inferior. I thought it was actually your standalone initially...but that's extremely odd that new burns will play in your standalone while the older ones won't. I've read plenty of people with Princo media have had their disks become completely unreadable by any standalone or DVD ROM. Maybe your at that point...if you can rip the data off them...you may wanna burn them onto a better DVDR before it's too late. But that's on you.

The only thing I can think of is that the newer Princo's are from a different batch. If they are...then the dye's may be different for the newer Princo disks, then they are for the older disks. Princo changes their dyes like the weather...so that could be it as well. Look at the write side and see if you can notice any visable differences.

Compatibility isn't everything...your Ritek's didn't play...but they are of a higher quality then Princo...so you probably should've considered a more versatile standalone player initially and stuck witn the higher quality Ritek.

Check the DVD PLAYER section on the "others" tab to the left of the forum....check out the Philips 724 AT model...that's the one I have and purchased it after researching for hours on this site. The research paid off...that player plays any media, brand, quality, dye type, format, ... i've ever thrown in it. And you can probably get it under $100 now from Best Buy.

Check other versatile players as well....but you may want to consider re-doing those movies on those Princo disks all over onto higher quality media.

  3. thanks for that defense. I think I will take your advice before I have to bin all my dvd-r's. Just one 64 million dollar question ( in your opinion) which ritek media brand do you recommend????

    Thanks again.......Anthony
