I just attempted to create a DVD project in DVDWS after creating severasl MPEGS from Adobe Premier, and it is not working.
Synopsis of First Attempt
I imported the files, created chapters, and menus. Tried to burn, and it constantly failed on the render of Motion Menus. (Here is a thread on that problem if interested: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=167527&highlight=)
In a nutshell, after reinstalling DVDWS twice, Ulead Tech support decided my project was corrupt. I recreated the project, and no longer have motion menus failing...except I have to use AVIs instead of MPEGS.
Synopsis of Second Attempt
When I import the MPEGS, I find that it takes multiple minutes to load a given file. Very slow to work with it. I do not remember this being the case when I did the first project. (By the way, I had 115GB free disk, and 100% defragmented drive that the files were on!)
Also, when I try to create chapters, DVDWS churns on the computer for 10 minutes, then I have an Application Failure, wiht the error in Module DVDWS.EXE, Appver 1.0.0.1, Module Name MPEGIN.DLL, Offset: 00009d74.
So, I gave up on chapters and created the DVD w/o chapters.
What I'm doing now
Working with AVIs and letting DVDWS do all conversion. Chapters working. Motion menus working. ?But I'd sure like to create MPEGS first due to disk space
I haven't found any threads about this problem. Any thoughts?
BTW...I have Adobe set up to create MPEGS via Video Server through TMPGENC. I may try that again. but it is very much slower than Adobe.

I also use Adobe pRemiere but I do not use the MPEG conversion feature in Premiere. I have suspicions that Premiere might not be creating completely kosher MPEG files, and also it doesn't do that great a job of creating MPEG-2 or MPEG-1 files. They look clearly inferior to TMPG.
Like you, I don't want to use TMPG all the time because it turns too much time. I found the solutionw as to buy the Mainconcept MPEG-2/ MPEG-1 codec. You can buy it online for only $50 and it works fast -- on my system, at about 1.2 times real time vs. the 4 x real time required by TMPG. That's quite a time saving -- about 2.5 hours saved per hour encoded.
More importantly, the Mainconcept encoder gives results only slightly inferior to TMPG. I still use TMPG for maximum encoding quality but have moved to Mainconcept for stuff that needs to be done fast and the quality is stille xcellent.
You might try Mainconcept and the shareware app DVDLab. These might solve your probelms. I'm not a big fan of Premiere internal MPEG conversion -- swiss-army-knife-type video apps typically have compatiability and quality problems. Best to use separte apps for video encoding and perhaps another app than DVD Workshop to author DVDs. -

Mainconcept provideds the MPEG encoding that is used in Adobe 6.5 for MPEG conversion. Maybe you weren't aware of that. I suppose that it might be different than purchasing the Mainconcept version, but I have heard it is not.
That being said, now that I just finished making a DVD a little bit ago via the AVI files and letting DVDWS do the encoding: it Jitters like crazy!
I'm searching the site for info on Jitter now. This is driving me crazy (not that it's a long drive). I saw things like the interlace being set wrong (can't even find how to set that in DVDWS); encoding at too high a rate. Argh! OOopps...I better take this topic to a different thread.
Back to MPEGS in DVDWS...
So, do your Mainconcept MPEGS work fine in DVDWS? Not real slow to work in DVDWS with them? No DVDWS app bomb problems? Thanks

If the MPEG encoding engine of Adobe Premiere is by MainConcept The one in any of Ulead's products (DVDWS, MediaStudio, etc.) is by Ligos LSX which has only received so-so quality reviews. This may or may not account for your "jittery" problem, but Ligos sure encodes fast. Ligos also powers the encoding in Sonic MyDVD which pretty much comes bundled with DVD-writers. Have you tried MyDVD yet? It handily accepts MPEG files encoded with TMPGenc (and NOT re-encoding them, as DVDWS is wont to do depending on ytour settings, of course). Its one fault is it prefers to create DVDs with LPCM audio, whether you give it *.wav or *.mpa to begin with.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i". -
ewingr,
Have you tried DVD-lab? It supports motion menus and dosen't re-encode video. It can't, it dosen't have an encoder.
I use Adobe Premiere 6.5 and also use the included Main Concept encoder updated to v1.3. I've used DVDWS in the past with good results. It never re-encoded my MPEG's, so I don't know why you are having problems.
I now use DVD-lab only. It is a much better product, and think you'll be happy with it. It's not as easy to learn as DVDWS, but it has much more power with dvd creation.Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........ -
With regard to Adobe being powered by Ligos...it says right on the Endobe Encoder "Powered by Main Concept".
If I encode them in Premier using VBR, 7000 MAX, 5000 AVG, 2500 Min, and tell DVDWS to encode at MAX 8000, it does not re-encode....ever (of course this is based on just a few movies I've made)
I have not used, or heard of before now, DVD-Lab. From a use standpoint, I really like DVDWS. I would consider DVD-Lab. I wonder how expensive it is. DVDWS was not cheap!
Reminder: re-encoding is not my problem: I now have 2 problems: working with MPEGS in DVDWS is very slow and blows up DVDWS when I try to create chapters; and now I get jitter.
Racer-X: You said you worked with DVDWS with no problems...do you remember if you encoded to MPEGS first? Given my variety of problems, I am thinking I have something installed on my PC that may have a DLL in common with DVDWS that may be giving me these fits. Thanks

ewingr,
I always encode MPEG-2s before I import into Authoring App. What you said about setting encoding rate for DVDWS higher than encoded MPEGs makes sence, if I remember you also have to check "do not re-encode video" just before compiling.
I think DVD-lab is much better. You can try it out free for 30 days and if you like it, you can buy for $70 US. Download it here:

I too have preferred to encode to MPEG first. I don't know why my DVDWS is giving me such a problem. I find that loading MPEGS into Premier is somewhat slow also, but not near as bad as DVDWS.
I will take a look at DVD-Lab. Does it support motion menus, chapters etc? Oh...I can lookThanks

Well, after mucho jacking around, testing, and knashing of teeth, I have a fix...maybe.
Remember in the first post for this thread, I mentioned the application errors on mpegin.dll? Well, it is version 1.1.1.67.
Finally, I just decided to try searching my drive for mpegin.dll, and I found 3. Two from ULEAD, both bersion 1.1.1.67. I have one from Mainconcept, version 1.1.1.66. I renamed my 1.1.1.67 dlls, and copied the 1.1.1.66 one into the directories, and you guessed it! It works.
So, that dll from ULEAD is problematic. They don't seem to know it. I called them several times and emailed them...jumped through all kinds of hoops on my system to no avail.
By the way, my system has been acting like it has a virus on it, especially after doing some editing of video. It would run very very slow, almost seem like it's locked up. I would have to reboot. I hope this fixes that too. I'll provide an update here if it does. Thanks

The Ulead Web site has - for some time - featured a download recommended for Adobe Premiere 6.x users:
http://www.ulead.com/tech/msp/msp_ftp.htm
It is called the Ulead MPEG VIO DRIVER UPDATE PATCH.

I had applied that. It did NOT fix the problem. And, it did not contain the older version of MPEGIN.DLL which did fix my problem.
Thanks

Roger,
you've saved me from searching for more than 6 weeks (!) for a solution for my problem of black lines in the preview window of DVD Movie factory2 and DVD workshop. I tried three graphic cards, reinstalled W2k from scratch, changed drivers and so on. And now RELIEF!As you found out, both use mpegin.dll (1.1.1.54). I too found several dlls from main concept in other prgs, so I used 1.1.1.72 and 1.1.1.80, and the problem is ALMOST gone. In DVDWS it's lookimg good, only the window is shifted to the left and this small portion of the window is on the right side. (Is that clear?)- In MF2, the dll causes a freeze when hitting the PLAY button. So what to do? How many dlls do we have to try for fixing this problem? Main Concept is pointing at Ulead, Ulead is not aware of this. Are there other dlls that we have to change or what was it?
W2k SPK4, DX9, 2xPII 400 MHZ, ASUS board.
Again: thanks Roger!

I appreciate your input. I hoped it would help. I've been fighting this for several weeks myself. Have a lot of hours in it.
I might add that my comment about the system running very slow: This did not fix that. As I noted, it always has a problem after editing video: more specifically, after editing in Premier 6.5. So, I just reinstalled Premier, and after only 1 test (edited one file, and exported to MPEG), I am working now withough slowdown. I will update with more on that here after a little more time.
One interesting thing: when I reinstalled Premier, I had one failure. Unable to run tcwi.exe (or TCW something 8) ...I wrote it down in a hurry, and can't read my writing) , with an error of -1. Don't know what that's about. I may post a question on that elsewhere. Thanks
