i have 5 20 minute movies that my son watches, i want to put them all on one dvd. i have searched for but not found an efficeint way to do this.
i simply want to rip the main movie, no features, no games, no anything
just the 20 minute movie, then use dvd architect or something to create a dvd with those 5 shows on there. can someone please help me?
is there not a way to rip a mpg straight from the dvd?

there is a way to rip discs with SmartRipper where you end up with one large .vob file, instead of multiple .vob files (you will need to investigate that further, I don't use it enough so I don't know how to do it).
if you rip each of those discs to a single .vob, you can then use DVD Lab, or another authoring software that accepts .vob files as an input, to author a compilation disc.- housepig

Take this with a grain of salt, but this is what works for me.
I use DVD2SVCD to make MPEG's from my DVD's. I then simply burn them in ISO/file mode in Nero 6. My DVD player plays them quite well from a file mode (just plain files in a directory which I select).
Your DVD player must be able to handle raw MPEG's for this to work though. Another caveat; I haven't ripped 20 minute programs/episodes, but I don't see why this wouldn't work.
hope this helps a bit.

what about using DVD Shrink? can i get 1 vob file with that? (i'm not very familiar with vob files) or, cna i just select the large vob file that dvd shrink outputs on "re-author" and bring that into dvd lab or something? will it have both video and audio?

If you have DVD-lab, then just rip the movies as VOB files with you favorite ripper, then import the VOBs and author. Since DVD-Lab will work with the VOBs directly, you don't have a lot of mess to play with.
Per the previous post,
1) Rip the episodes in DVD Shrink in re-author mode.
2) Take the VOB files, import them into DVD-Lab - DO NOT DEMUX
3) Add 4 more movie slots in Lab
4) Drag the VOBs to the movie slots in order you want them to play
5) Add menu if you want or make first play the first movie in the sequence.
6) Make sure that the connections link the first movie to the second, 2nd to 3rd, etc.
7) Compile DVD and burn resulting output! -
1) Rip the episodes in DVD Shrink in re-author mode (movie only)
import all 5 dvds files into TMPGEnc DVD Author
shrink them with shrink if need
p.s. it would go smother if you knew the total sizes of all movies beforehand and shrink them first then use TMPGEnc -
ok, well i have tried just ripping the main movie vile using DVD Shrink and then importing the large vob file into dvd lab, but for some reason i get no sound when i pop it into my dvd player. the sound track shows up when i bring the movie into dvd lab, so i'm really stumped as to why is does not work when played? any suggestions?

Can you select a different audio track with your remote on your stand alone?

You can try using VobEdit to extract the video and audio streams you need and then reauthor everything to an new DVD with a nice menu with your favourite DVD authoring program. If it gets too big you can shrink it afterwards with DVDShrink/DVD2One/Instantcopy or you can reencode to lower bitrate with TMPGEnc Plus before the authoring.
