changing audio bitrate

Hi,

I am working to convert captured video (capped using huffy codec) to svcd format.

I extract the audio from the capped avi with virtaual dub to wav which was captued at 48khz
When i create an mp2 using HeadAC3he it has a bitrate of 224 kbps, i would like to lower it to 128 kpbs or less to increase the video bitrate....

Does anyone have a suggestion as per what tool(s) will do this ?

TMPGEnc, SCMPX, tooLame, an old version of CoolEdit that comes with an mp2 encoder.. being stuck at 224 sucks.. did headac3e not give you any options for lowering it?

No, i didnt notice any.

I'll give tooLame a try, i've heard of that one before.

what is a good audio rate to use in svcd format 128 ? lower? higher?

well... 128k can work if you find toolame gives good results (cant say ive tested it below 160 recently) but generally the Lame engine is supposed to work better at higher rates. if you use that it usually needs to either be a simple source, or filtered down / using a frequency limit (~14-15khz tops) in the encoder. Mp2 isn't as efficient as mp3... 112, 128k works *alright* under some circumstances, but you WILL have to use joint stereo. 160k or 192k is far better, 224k (yes, yes, i know you dont want that! ) or higher can be CD-transparent. And you particularly want high rates if you want Prologic rather than 'just' Stereo.
Course if you happen to have a mono source, something between 64 and 112 is better..

For the lower rates, I would (as ever ) recco the one included in legacy Cooledit, especially as you can easily filter it first it just seems to work better than the others when there's a bit shortage (and open up better when there's more, but has a few other troubles which become more apparent if you're not bothered about high response etc)
