  1. hey, how is everyone? havent been here for a while (since vcdhelp.com). 8)

anyway, i absolutely love the interface and simplicity DVD Shrink has provided me, as its great if youre only concerned with "movie-only" backups. as most of my movies are oldies, the majority of them seem to keep within the DVD-5 spec area. so... if i am using DVD Shrink just to rip and re-author (with "0" compression) the movie, does it keep all the original data, or does it transcode it with the same data rates, etc? i AM a nitpicker and dont want to end up with anything different than from my original disc. i want them to play as if i bought a neutered retail version.
    thanks all!!!

If the disc is DVD5 there is NO NEED to use DVD Shrink at all. The easiet thing to do is use DVD Decrypter:

    1. D/load the newest verison of DVD Decrypter
    2. Run DVD Decryper
    3. Place source DVD in DVD-ROM drive
    4. Choose "Mode | ISO - Read"
    5. Rip ISO image file to HD
    6. Place blank DVDR in burner
    7. Choose "Mode | Iso - Write"
    8. Load the ISO image file
    9. Burn image file

That's it. It produces an exact 1:1 copy, all the menus, extras, etc. There's no need to run DVDShrink with all compressions set to zero (just wastes time). Only use DVD shrink to backup DVD9 movies.

For DVD9 movies you can do movie only (re-author) or shrink everything (backup). There are some excellent DVDShrink guides at http://www.doom9.org but some 'cooler looking ones' at:

  3. its not the discs that are DVD-5, its that only the movie will fit on a DVD-R. the full disc may be like 7 GBs, however, the movie will be like 3.5 GBs. i never do 1:1 copies, but i want 1:1 data. thats why i am asking the above question. sometimes the filesize is so close, i may have to take out the subtitles and optional audio formats that i dont particularily care about (ie. commentaries).

so, in theory, i have to re-author, but not recompress. DVD Shrink it the only interface i know about. so... how can i do this if i only want:

    1) movie
    2) 5.1 AC3 audio (english)
    3) subtitles (french/spanish/etc.)

    thanks!

if the movie will fit and you dont want to recompress you can always rip and strip with IfoEdit or DVDTOOL

Actually jarvis1781 I've switched to using DVDShrink for movies that fit with no reencoding. DVDShrink makes them just to easy. Of course I've never like the DVD Decrypter only option for reason that I will not bother to outline here, but my DVD Movie only (if it will fit without recompression) uses DVDShrink all the time now. Especially since sometimes I can just compress the options and keep the menus.

Whats temping now that I have recode is to use it and actually disable thing I don't need, and still keep the menus intact.

  6. hi deltaboy,
if your DVD is a DVD-9 but the movie only section takes less than 4.7GB, then using DVD Shrink, you need to select re-author, then re-encode.
Anyway, the re-author function will make all the menu stuff NOT WORKING CORRECTLY. Maybe the newer version is better but I do not have time to try it yet. If you select only the main movie and it's less than 4.7GB, there will be no re-encoding.

  7. well then... i guess my new question would be: what is the best software and procedure (with regards to simplicity) to use for re-authoring "movie-only" DVDs??? they are always barebone and will never contain menus and/or other stuff... pure movie! functionablility is the key.

scenario: movie-only files equal 4.8 GB. must remove certain audio tracks in order to fit on the DVD-R. recompressing is NOT an option.

    Hey neighbour

I'd still use DVDShrink, just uncheck Menues and Extras and go from there.

excellent ktnwin! the answer i was looking for. i was a bit worried, as i thought i had everyone on a completely different page. cause when using DVD Shrink, i noticed it says "encoding", even after i have selected "no compression". and also it says the compressed size is smaller than the original.

    ... a little confused

for new movie with no scratches

DVD Shrink is the way to go

    for slightly scratch discs

    SmartRipper, IfoEdit

    basically, jarvis1781's way

i get mad watching movie discs that i did with shrink

and it just skips a part of the movie because the disc was slighly scratched

    SmartRipper read right through it

The slightly smaller size is due to there no longer being any CSS on it, as well as some other added overhead being stripped.
