  1. I'm just curious if anyone knows exactly what "PATCHING" PS2 backups means? I have been doing an extensive amount of reading on PS2 backups as well as XBOX backups to decide which of the two systems i'm gonna get....and although it's definitely easier to backup all of the PS2 DVD5 games...vs the fact that XBOX has many DVD9 games....as well as the fact that XBOX DVD5 games are more complex to backup to begin with....

basically, the one thing I haven't seen a FAQ's for or maybe i'm just missing something...is the "PATCHING" of PS2 games. On a lot of the forums I see people post questions such as "THEIR BACKUPS HAVE X ISSUE OR THAT ISSUE" and someone else comes along and says.... 'DID YOU PATCH IT?" I haven't seen any detail on what "PATCHING" is...I was under the impression if you got any of the PS2 DVD-5 games along with a mod chip such as the Messiah 2 (which is the one i'd go with..even over the flashable DSM3 by the way) you could backup your DVD5 games the same way without problems.

For example, let's take "THE HULK" PS2 game..... it is 3.82 GB's...I was under the impression I could follow the steps for backing up that game and i'd have a perfect backup playable with my modded PS2. But according to some of the posts i've read..some additional type of "PATCHING" needs to be done on some games.

Can anyone explain this that understands it a little better or link something for me to read

    TIA

  2. patching mainly applies to dvdrips, resizing from 80=74min..

if you're using a modchip to play your backups then you wont need to patch at all (maybe dvd9 games, but they're pretty much non-existant at this point, maybe 2 or 3 games).

  3. thanks jeex...although i'm not sure what you mean when you say DVDRIPS and refer to 80 and 74 b/c that sounds like CD SPECS to me...but as long as the mod chip will work for backups then I can preserve the originals and always play the backups...glad to hear that...

anyway, you know the three DVD-9 games for the PS2?

xenosaga is one of them...but what are the other two?

  4. nevermind the DVD-9 game list...here they are right here....fortunately there are only four...and two of them are the same game..just one in JAP and the other in the US. Here's the list in case anyone else cares.

    8.05GB USA Xenosaga
    7.94GB JAP Xenosaga
7.20GB JAP GSakura Wars Atsuki Chishiyo Ni
    5.99GB USA MGS2: Substance

Actually patching refers to NTSC/PAL switches or cracks for a game, if the game has copy protection. Even a trainer (cheat menu at beginning of game).

    The 74/80 is for DVDRIPs.

  6. @faceman...what does the 74/80 stand for? Doesn't that stand for "minutes" or something? And you mentioned "IF" the game has copy protection.... are you saying that SOME PS2 games do NOT have copy protection? Also do you know what the copy protection for PS2 games is called?

    TIA

i've never heard of any copy protection used on any ps2 games.. i think i remember that some euro psx games had libcrypt protection.. but i wasnt aware of any ps2 games having them..

i've never really dealt with pal games so i'm unfamiliar with the whole patching to ntsc.. the only patches i've ever even messed with were nomod patches.. and the xenosaga patch (to make it swap magic compatible, which included a trainer & pal/ntsc selector).

    74 and 80 refer to the minutes of a cdr = 650meg 700meg cd's.

The ps2 games floating around the net on various peer2peer are dvds ripped onto 74/80 minutes cdr's.

No Mod patches are for games that will not work when a mod is in your system, that would be the copy protection I meant. I should have been alittle more clear in what I was trying to say (I tend to be vague sometimes).

    @defense

Like Northstar mentioned it stands for 74min CD-Rs and 80min CD-Rs. In my experience 74min DVDRIPS work a whole lot better on my chip than 80min DVDRIPS.

no mod patches are to bring dvd rips down to a size so they work on a no modded system. (eg. fliptop/swap magic combo)..

    so basically, you're totally wrong..

  11. PS2

No Mod KIT (not patch) - To rip a DVD game for CD-R size

NTSC/PAL Patch - To have a game work on all TV systems

Swap Trick Patch - So a game works with no mod swap or earlier modchips

Trainer Patch - Cheats enabled before game starts

    PS1

No Mod Patch - Have games work on modded systems (copy protection)

My mistake with mixing up PS1 patches and PS2, very far from not knowing what I speak of and being totally wrong. Appartently PS2 has not yet have had any mod protection in games. The No Mod for PS2 is a KIT not a patch.

ahahahah.. longer than me? were you in japan during the ps2 release party? i think not.. were you swapping your backups with the utilities disc? did you put in the first (albit kind of crappy) modchip in your ps2? were you working on ripping games during the early days?

i'll be arogant wherever the hell i want to be..

i have seniority!! i've been here may of 2001, you've only been here since september of 2001.. not to mention i have more than 2 times as many posts as you..

dont blame me for your lack of knowledge.

[note to the mod reading this: lock the thread, this could get dirty]

  15. I've been on these boards longer than my sign up date and post counts mean nothing.

Modding and knowing all aspects of backing up since 97 man. Calm your attitude down. Only one making this ugly is you. No one is saying anyone is better than the other here. Seriously, grow up man.

  16. No reason for this to get out of hand.....Jeex definitely knows his shit....not to say you don't faceman....you confused the PS1 thing with PS2 modding/specifications....it could of happened to anyone. I just think that maybe your first post with the whole copyright thing by "quoting" jeex and saying it actually means something else...put him on the defensive...because what he was saying was right.

Either way..it's no biggie...and it's probably my fault for posting PS2 questions on the forum....I should of posted this question at a site like PS2OWNZ.COM which is specifically for consoles like the PS2....I just know there is a huge variety of gamers on the boards and figured in the "OFF TOPIC" section i'd get the answer I was looking for...and I was right...but I still should of asked it in another forum.

    Thanks for all the help.
