  1. Hey guys,
Im not really sure how to search for answers or how to exactly ask the right question so here goes:
I got a divx avi movie that's widescreen (im assuming 16x9, thats how it is on my computer players). Now, I converted to SVCD mpg format with TMPEGEnc and everything is fine. BUT when I actually burn it on a cd as SVCD, when I play it on my set-top player, everything is stretched (vertically). The screen is all there horizontally, but, I guess, some of it is missing vertically.
SO, is there an easy way to, I guess, reencode with TMPEGenc and either add the widescreen bars on the top and bottom of the mpeg so that I can get real widescreen and/or make it 4:3 so it at least looks decent? When I watch my burned SVCD, it looks like I got the width, but it's stretching the height. Does anyone understand what I'm saying?

Thanks for any help, you guys have been pretty helpful in the past.

  2. in TMPGEnc, for OUTPUT VIDEO settings....that depends on the TV you're gonna watch it on...

your SVCD OUTPUT VIDEO should be 4:3 if you're gonna watch on regular TV and 16:9 on widescreen HDTV and Plasmas...

keep in mind that these are not interchangeable...watching 16:9 on regular TV and watching 4:3 on widescreen TV will not look good.

    ------

btw, on your standalone dvd player...look in options and make sure you set the video display to 4:3 Pan&Scan...since i'm assuming you have regular TV......only set display to 16:9 if you have widescreen TV.

  3. OK, so even though the original is widescreen, and I have a fullscreen TV, when I watch the burned copy (if burned widescreen) it will only show what my fullscreen TV will show. I guess this may sound obvious, but I was curious as to why widescreen DVDs will play widescreen on a regular 4:3 TV and an SVCD will not. Is this a valid question, or am I making any sense??

    Thanks!

  4. Ok, I just tried a test at 4:3 and it added the bars. So if I finish this and re-burn it, it should look decent on my 4:3 tv?

    Thanks!

sorry...i'm confused on what you're saying...

but 16:9 or 4:3 does NOT necessary refer to WS vs. FS..... it is actually referring to the type of TV you're watching it on..... irregardless if the original is WS or FS, if you're gonna watch it on a regular TV, your OUTPUT VIDEO in TMPGEnc MUST be 4:3

the same goes for the display settings on your standalone DVD player...you need to look at the VIDEO DISPLAY OPTIONS of your dvd player and make sure it's set to 4:3 PAN&SCAN if you're watching on regular TV.

you referring to 16:9 Anamorphic WS. 16:9 Anamorphic WS is designed to watch on 16:9 WS TV, but it will automatically resize the 16:9 widescreen to fit on your 4:3 TV. However, there are commercial non-anamorphic 4:3 WS movies. even though they're WS, they're 4:3...designed to be watched on 4:3 TVs.

(S)VCDs are non-anamorphic... SVCDs can NOT resize the video. if you encode your (S)VCD OUTPUT VIDEO as 16:9, it will NOT automatically resize it to fit on 4:3 TV. hence, you need to make your output 4:3 to fit on 4:3 TV.

  6. OK ok, I got ya. Didn't mean to sound to much like a newb, but I'm still learning how to use all of the encoding progs...TMPEGEnc, vdub, etc. luckily I can test on a rewritable, so no biggie.

Thanks for your quick replies, I'm trying to watch the vid tonight (and now I should be able to)...

Oh no, not at all, in fact you answered my question perfectly... Like I said, I guess I just wasn't sure how to ask it.

(S)VCDs are non-anamorphic... SVCDs can NOT resize the video
this was basically the exact question I was asking, or at least wondering...

    Thanks again!
