  1. Im a newbie and for my first project i decided to backup sopranos the first season i tried following the guides but it seems to be a bit different. If anyone has sucessfully ripped and burned the sopranos please let me know which methods you used and which methods might be better suited for a first time ripper/dvd backup sprecialist =)

Search harder. "EP" DVD's have been done to death. SVCD is simple to do. DVDR can be done several ways (depending on whether or not you want to re-encode at all).

  3. 2 questions:

    1) you wanna keep everything (i.e. menus, special features, etc...) or just the episodes only

    2) you wanna back up commercial DVD9 to just 1 DVD-R/+R..or split the commercial DVD9 to 2 DVD-R/+R discs... (i.e. for every DVD that comes with the set...you wanna burn just 1 DVD disc or split to 2)

  5. Use a freeware util called DVD Shrink, compress the menus and extras to the highest level (not still pictures, but the one right before that), then strip out the unneeded audio, and finally compress the main EPs as high as needed to fit on one DVDr.

What I just typed are broad strokes, follow the URL poopyhead gave you in his reply for more specifics with screenshots.
