Is it necessary to "verify" a dvd after burn, what does the feature actually do???

It seems to be checking that data can be accurately read off the disc. I used to skip the verify in Toast, because the burn had been successful. Later on I would play a disc that would just freeze or refuse to skip past problematic chapters. It burned me up so badly that I'd made a coaster even when it didn't look as though I did!
A couple times I let Toast verify discs after successful burns and found that the verify failed. I put the disc in my settop and sure enough, it would freeze/refuse to play right at the approximate timing the Toast verification failed.
In my case it turns out I was doing a combination of using cheap discs, and experiencing slow data transfers from an external drive that was slowly becoming corrupt. -
my understanding is that it's "verifying" the burn was really successfull
It reads over whats been burned as if its reading each sector reburning it to make sure it matches what you wanted to burn, and that all of the data can be read.
I have never had a burn complete and then fail verification like AntnyMD has though. Typically for DVD's i just hit ABORT if its gone into verification, or i just eject before verification.
if it doenst work ill just reburn it! -
It does a sector to sector check of the original data and what was written.
I have had burns fail verification (always verify!!!) with CDs and Apple DVD-R's and ignored them to find that I spent hours trying to restore lost data. -
agreed. The most common problem for failed burns that appear to be successful it a dirty disc. Even the smallest amout of dirt or lint on the disc could cause a sector or two to not be burned correctly.

Oh im not saying dont verify it when its something important
im just saying if your burning it but can still burn it later on there's no need to do the verify (which takes time for dvd's) since if you get the error you would have to just burn it agian anyway
when they are important i verify the burn
