First make sure the camcorder is connected before starting Video Studio. If it still does not pick up the camcorder, disconeect the camcorder and reinstall Video Studio. reconnect the camcorder, then launch VS. If this does not work, do a system restore.

  5. Try another port if you have it.

I had a similar problem and it turns out the camera can only be recognised in port 1 (CN1), although through the others the computer will recognise another device.

Which version of Windows are you running? I have 98SE and had to load a "Camcorder" driver to get it to work.

The problem I had was realted to Win98, so I suppect that it isn't applicable to XP. Anyway try (without using ulead) plugging in the camcorder and pressing play, to see if XP then finds the camcorder.

  9. I'm having a similar problem to this. Running on XP Home & PC can't see camcorder. I'm going to try with a different cable on the off chance this is the problem. If you manage to sort it, please post what you did.

  10. I suggest that you try DVIO or DVapp (freewares). Some digital camcorders are not recognized by certain programs.

I use DVIO to capture DV footage to an avi file. You can get it from the Tools section here. I have XP pro and it works fine.

Make sure your camera turned to vcr when capturing.

  14. For some camcorders such as Sony camcorders, you must enable DV out from the camcorder's menu. See your manual on how to do this.

This is also applicable to Panasonic cameras. By default, the DV port is switched off and must be switched on thru the cameras menu.

  16. I ahve also worked with Ulead Video Studio (and Media Studio) to capture video from a DV camcorder.
Ulead has a quirk. For no reason, sometimes you must go into the
CAPTURE DRIVER menu and reset the CAPTURE DRIVER setting to IEEE1394. Once in a while, for no reason I could figure out, the Ulead capture driver willreset itself to NO DEVICE SELECTED. You just have to go into that menu and choose IEEE1394 (that is, firewire for a DV camcorder).
Then Close the Ulead program and open it again.
Sometimes, about once per month, I also got into a situation in which Ulead would simply balk and refuse to load DV video from my camcorder. In that case I shut off the camcorder and turned it on again, then shut off Ulead Video Studio and ran it again.
In every case, when Ulead VIdeo Studio came back up it recognized the DV camcorder.
You can't be having any kidn of arcane driver problems, because IEE1394 is as absolutely bulletproof as you can get. Firewire drivers are built into the WIndows operating system (I've used both Win 98 and XP and Win2000 Pro with firewire -- they all work automaticaly, the firewire drivers are all built in at the level of the opearting system, like SCSI).
So unlike a video capture card, which can be challenging to configure what with WDM vs VFW drivers etc., a DV camera connected to your firewire port is as error-free and foolproof as it's possible to get in the world of digital video.
That's why it has to be something really *really* simple, like turning off and on your digicam, or going into the capture driver menu in Ulead and chanign it from NO CAPTURE DEVICE to IEEE1394.
