Inverse telecine question

I think I know the purpose of IVTC, but I don't know what to do. Here is what I did so far...

1) Opened video source on TMPEGEnc and checked the IVTC option.
2) Clicked auto set and chose "Automatic (remove horizontal stripes)" (I am using rate control mode: 2-pass variable bitrate).
3) Wait 10 minutes or so and certain frames have red borders.

I understand I have to look for frames that look... line-ish. What specific steps must I follow? Is it over after that, do I have to hit the "check" button,... ? I have read the guide at http://purpleman.cjb.net and the ErMaC video guide at http://www.animemusicvideos.org but I still don't understand what to do exactly.

Also, should I deinterlace the even fields as well?

I ran IVTC and got all the red frames.

Are the red frames supposed to be the clear looking frames? Or are they the bad ones? If I see a frame that looks bad, does the frame have to be red? Do I have to do anything with the other frames around it?

The red frames are the "good" ones. If you see a bad one, you can unclick it and click one of the others around it. Don't mess up or it's a pain to fix up - when finally done, click the check button to be sure you didn't click in an extra one or click off one without turning another on.

One of the ways I've used to fix a bad one (although I've found that one bad one usually means lots of bad ones, and that usually means either it wasn't FILM to start with, or that you've got the wrong field first) is to just deinterlace the one frame.

(You don't have to hit the check button, but if you messed up, you'll get audio out of sync).

I've found that with good sources, including laserdisc video captures, TMPGEnc does a perfect job at IVTC without my having to intervene at all.
