is there an update for my dvd player?

I own a philips 835 dvd player, the only disk it will play are store rented/purchased no dvd r/rw.. etc...does anyone no of a patch I could try that might change the software so it can read other types of disk mp3,movies etc...

Have you actually tried to play a DVDR disc or are you going by the player's manual? According to the dvd hacks section on the left there are no hacks for your player. Most hacks just remove the macrovision or make the player region free.
