  1. I'm making a backup of a long movie and IC7 reports that it will compress it about 54%, it is the lowest percentage I have ever done.
What could be the lowest percentage you should accept from IC7 witout getting an unwatchable movie?
    Thanks

    that depends on the movie

and how high the bitrate is

a higher quality movie will problably be acceptable as oppose to a low budget film

  3. As you are converting a DVD9 to a DVD5, it could never go lower than 50%, duh!

IC7 will take 9GB and get it down to 4.7GB

So it basically comes down to, how long is the movie in minutes.

If it is above 2 hours, should always skip the extra audio and bonus material so more bitrate is allocated to the main movie.

  5. i've had to use 50% on DVDshrink...still looks great...

however, it really depends on the movie...

i.e. widescreen (skinnier the better) is easier to compress than fullscreen

  6. I agree with dicktheprick. Go below sixty percent and the quality loss will start to become rather apparent. I put the extras (if I do a full-disk) at around fifty to forty percent and save the extra room for the main feature. Yes, the features will look blocky, but the sacrifice is worth it when watching the movie.

Another alternative is to strip the main movie out using IfoEdit, then use Instant Copy on it provided the movie exceeds 4.7GBs. Works pretty well.

  7. Its hard to measure what is noticable since it is different for every person. What you might think is acceptable will look like crap to someone else. The best method is trial and error to see what suits you.

  9. Hi all,

That's not really true. I have a DVD with an aquarium collection which contains 4 differend soundtracks and each of them in both DD5.1 AND DTS. So if this all take up , let's say 3 gb and the movie itself is 4gb (Total of 7gb) Since audio tracks aren't compressed, i would have to recompress the video to about 33% of it's original size to make it fit !!!

On the other hand, I recently did the PAL Apocalypse Now Redux, which has a running time of 194 minutes (!!!!) but only has a DD2.0 sound track. Because the soundtrack is so small there is more space for the movie itself and i ended up with a perfectly watchable DVDR version. (Atleast on my 32" TV)
