I have the Freecom Classic DVD+/-RW which is basically an NEC 1300a clone. I too wasn't sure about upgrading the firmware but after trawling the net I found a post that says as long as your computer bios information says it is an NEC 1300a and not the OEM manufacturer you should be OK. I have updated my firmware to the latest "hacked" version that allows multi region and a LOT more media brands. Full details can be found here http://forum.rpc1.org and just search for NEC 1300a

  3. I too have updated the NEC 1300A firmware to the aforementioned "hacked" version and it works GREAT! Bumped my ripping speed to phenomenal levels as well... I rip DVD-5s at an average of 12x and DVD-9s around 9-11x. Sweet Deal !
