  1. Does anyone know if any firmware exists that will enable the Pioneer DVR-A05 to support DVD+r's.

    Thanks

Ive not heard of a writer yet thats been released as a + or - only drive that can write to the other format with a firmware hack, i dont think its possible as they technoligy inside the drives are different for writing to either disc... unless you have a multidrive of course.

Im sure someone will correct me if im wrong

The pioneer A05 is a - only burner. The new A06 is a multi-format burner. There is no way to convert an 05 to multi-format- Otherwise there would be a lot of very happy people out there .

This is interesting. Why cant a -r drive be made to burn +r. Is there any difference in the laser.

  5. i wouldnt go as far to say it 'cant', i just dont think anybody is willing to experiment on their pricey drive
    hacked firmware is one thing.......
    modifying a drive is another.

  6. Lets tell some truths here rather than speculation. The hardware of the A05 and 106 is virtually identical except for one eeprom which is different but of a compatible type. The contents of the eeprom are not changed with a firmware update, so it would need to be investigated.

A 106 PC board in a A05 mechanism does burn +R/RW discs and has been tested and verified.

The encryption of the firmware is different between A05 firmwares and 106 firmwares preventing a 106 firmware from being flashed into a A05. the drive itself does the decryption so a 106 firmware would need to be decrypted and re-encrypted with a A05 encryption.

It is possible but if someone will 1. be bothered, and 2. risk their drive testing it remains to be seen.

    cheers

Last I knew the only way to do this was to remove it and either reprogram it or program a new one to replace it. That does not mean of course that its not possible, I've just never heard of an eeprom being changed short of via a hardware method.

I would be sweet though... nice drive, run a little software NEW NICE DRIVE!
