  1. My Sony DRU510A only rips at 2x which takes far too long. I have an idea that DVD ROMS can read movies at higher speed (16x only refers to data and not movies) and I'm looking to achieve 4x or better. Anyone have any recommendations?

  2. try going to your hardware device manager, right click on whichever IDE channel your dvd-rom is on, and enable DMA. (properties - advanced settings)

if you have it set to PIO only, it'll take like an hour for each movie. DMA takes me 10-15 minutes.

  3. You're right -- and the Sony can't be speeded up.

DVD burners are capped at that speed as a token node to the studios (and note that Sony is ALSO a studio, which lends extra urgency to their position). But any DVD-ROM can read *much* faster (and will save wear and tear on your burner -- two excellent reasons to get one).

I bought a Sony ROM to go along with my burner for less than $40, including shipping. It rips routinely at 8-9x: get yourself something similar.

I use a dvd-rom for ripping. its a 16x speed and ripping is based on data extraction. depending on the dvd (dvd-5 or dvd-9) using dvd dycypter i can rip at 12x for single layer and 7x for dual layer dvds. my sony drive is too slow for this.

the latter is very important, as it will be much cheaper ($30) to replace a dead DVD-ROM than DVD burner ($150+).

From what I understand, only Sony DVD writers are maxed out at 2X ripping. I have a TDK 440 +/- writer and also a Pioneer 105 and both will rip at an average of 4X-5X. That's why I didn't go with the Sony writer. But of course I also use a Samsung DVD-ROM that rips at an average of 8-10X

  7. No, my Pioneer 106 is also capped -- this was a recent development (sort of a gentlemen's agreement now that burning is common).

  8. My el-cheapo CenDyne (cost me $10 on the weekend special) rips at a whopping 14x, and on dual layer it go at 10x. Its a 16x reader.

This is on one of my other computers that has the same specs as mine except for the DVD-ROM.

  9. Can you guys give your DVD-ROM model number? I bought a Samsung SD-816 for ripping. It was ripping at 3.4x for a while and now it will never go above 1.9x. I have tried the BIOS setting to enable DMA, in windows it auto selects PIO4/DMA2 but it still only rips at 1.9x max. Do I need to change a cable?

  10. It may be that the encryption on your DVD, or the decrypter you use is too slow. Also, your CPU may not be powerful enough.
