I have an iMac 400 DV running OS 9.2 10 GB 576 Ram. I have a Pioneer DVR 105 DVD Burner in a fire wire case. The Drive is recognized in the System Profiler and recognized in Toast Lite. When I put in Movie DVD's it does not show up on the desktop. I also put in three different types of -R Media CompUSA, Memorex, and the one that came with the burner and it does not show up. Toast lite would say after about 3 minutes please put in a recordable disc. When I put in CDR's the drive boots up quickly and the blank media shows up on the desktop. Anyone with a suggestion as to what my next move should be please let me know. I am pondering just getting a G4 tower

getting a faster computer is always an option, but it sounds like one of several issues.
it could be OS 9. You might be missing some extensions. Your best bet is to upgrade to OS X. We have OS X running on an identical machine and it is fine.
it could be your version of Toast. Toast lite sucks. Get Titanium.
All in all, i highly recommend upgrading to OS X 10.2. that will most definitely solve your problems. -
Agreed.
you can get 10.2 on ebay for more than 1/2 off! 51$ ending in 2hours.
Likewise, i'd say its a combination of
1. your old system
2. using toast lite instead of Titanium
3. using the drive in an external enclosure.
id bet upgrading to 10.2 or even 10.1 if you want to spend less $ to get to OSX would help greatly. -
I had that problem with OS 9 before. Once I upgraded to OS X I no longer had the problem. I think that it had something to do with the drive I was using. It was a newer drive, but I was still using on old OS. It seemed like the OS was trying to keep up with the drive, but was unable, if that makes sense.

I have the exact opposite problem (well, not exact maybe)...My external firewire drive with a DVR-105 in it will not burn anything in OSX 10.2.6 (in another thread here a guy said he went back to 10.2.something and it works for him now, but I don't wanna try that). It'll read DVD's and cd's fine-I can use it to copy DVD's to my hard drive-but any time I've ever tried to burn with it in OSX it hangs at the beginning and then, that's it.
In order to burn DVD's I have to reboot in OS 9.2.2 (kind of a pain in the ass but at least it works).I have no trouble reading or writing anything in OS9.
I have researched this a little and it seems to be not an uncommon problem that no one (apple, Roxio, whoever) wants to take responsibility for...I'm planning on buying some kind of G4 with a built in superdrive in the near future....
Could it be a extensions problem you're having?I once had a firewire drive that i couldn't write to and it turned out to be some competing firewire extensions (Like LaCie vs. Apple or something)-i just had to fool around with the extensions. -
Heya
Yea, I'm that dude you were talking about. I'm running 10.2.3 or something like that...not entirely sure. But anyways, when I upgraded to 10.2.6, if I went to write a DVD, as SOON as the "writing lead-in" message came up above the status bar, the DVD-R would be ejected and would report a buffer underrun. Bullshit. Even in simulation mode this happened.
I just refuse to update to 10.2.6. That's all good for now, but if 10.3 comes out and doesn't work with my burner, there's gonna be a problem. Considering I paid $800 CAN for my drive, I'm not about to be sucked into compatibility issues. That's what I paid the extra money for...smooth sailing.
What's really stupid is that Lacie says that it's d2 U&I drive will work with iTunes, but I have yet to get that going.
Such a pain in the arse, but I guess I had it coming because I'm using my DVD burner for EVIL purposes. Bringing hollywood down from the inside out baby!-kamikaze -
