  1. Hi, this is my first time on this forum so please forgive me for any "newbie" mistakes i make. OK, here is my situtaion, im trying to rip some DVDs, firstly i tried a straight CD copy, once i learnend that the disk was copyrighted i gave up, is there anyway i can overcome this? Secondly i would i like to put either AVI's or MPEGs onto a DVD-R/RW so that it will play on my DVD player (preferably my home DVD player and not my PC one) is there anyway either of these that can be done?

Just to help im using Win XP, ive got the latest Version of Nero (i think) is there anyother software i should use? (if so where can i download it from?) Thanks very much for anyone who tries to help!

  2. for making backup's of your legally ownded DVD's, you can use a number of products. My favorite is DVDshrink. Other competing softwares are dvddecrpter, dvd2one, IC7 and a few others.

For converting AVI's and what not, since you are a newbie, I would recommend downloading dvd2svcd and buying a copy of either CCE or TMPGENC (both are encoders). There are a number of guides that walk you through the process of converting avi's (and DVD's with this method). In order to make the result compliant with DVD, you will need to change the resolution to 352x480 or leave it at 720x480. There are guides here that will assist you with this.

For mpegs, you can use an application like movie factory 2 that will take compliant mpegs and then allow you to author them.

There are numerous ways and numerous packages out there to do what you need to, but I feel as I have given you the easiest and least costly options. Others will say theres is better and I leave that up to you to decide.

  3. For DVD ripping check out the out to guides on the left. Look at the section DVD RIP. To convert from AVI to MPG look at the guides listed under "CONVERT."
