I'm about to inherit an older G4 tower from Dad's work - I'm not sure of the exact specs, but I do know that it only has a DVD-ROM drive (pre - Combo & SuperDrives)
Anyway I have agreed to take it on as I thought it would be a good machine for burning - especially if I buy a cheap DVR-105 or something similar tp put in the second slot. That way it won't tie up my 1GHz TiBook for hours on end.
Anyway, assuming that this machine is around the 500MHz mark (What i DO know is that it has 768MB RAM), will it cut the mustard for basic DVDBackup/DTOX/Toast operations? I realise it will be slower for DTOX, but faster for burning if i buy a 4x drive.
Is it worth it?

Up to a week ago, I had my good old G4 400 (agp) working with a Pioneer A103 (self installed) and 1.5Gb Ram
It worked great
This week I could sell it for a good price and replaced it by a G4 DP 1.25 (prices are coming down) -
Yeah, absolutely nothing wrong with using that G4 for DVD burning. I'm running a G3/450 right now with 256MB of RAM and doin' fine. The only problems I run into are when I've got to encode material, in which case, it takes days.
But just "backing-up" DVDs requires very little in terms of hardware.

I agree.
use to do it with a G4 450. It will help with the ripping time if you get a fast DVD read speed drive. The faster the dvd read, the faster it will rip.
DVD2ONE may take a while but its going to work.
burnign will be based on your drive and the media you choose.
enjoy your new mac.
if it doesnt have OSX on it already, id suggest getting it on there. -
I currently have a g4 400mhz and the pioneer a03 works perfect when installed inside and in an external case
My a03 even works in an external case with my 366mhz ibook with 196MB of ram via firewire.
I also purchased a sony dru500 and it works "almost" perfect inside and outside the case. (I can create DVD+R's that work well but I cant read them in the same machine right after I am done with them.) -
Thanks all
Being a PowerBook man I think I'm going to love being able to buy cheap stuff & plug it straight in. -
yes, one of the benefits of having a tower. And its upgradability
