Found this and is very interesting....

    http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/DVDMediaFormats/

'CDR-Info, has determined that DVD-R is clearly the most compatible DVD recording format on the market. To assess the compatibility level of DVD Formats we created video content on a DVD writer using DVD-R/RW and +R/RW media. These discs were then played back in other DVD players and DVD-ROM drives – over a 1,000 combinations of drive, media and player were tested.

The content created on a DVD-R/RW writer using a write once DVD-R disc played back in virtually all (96.1 percent) of the DVD players and DVD-ROM drives used in the research. DVD+R discs played back in 87.6 percent of the devices tested.

Since the market for recording to DVD has developed, and different formats have emerged, consumers have been concerned about the compatibility of their DVD recording devices with DVD players and DVD-ROM drives. The findings suggest that for customers who wish to create content on a DVD writer and interchange this with other PC drives and consumer DVD players, DVD-R is the clear format of choice."

  2. Maybe it's a bit more compatible simply because it's been around longer than DVD+R. I could care less as long as my backups play on my three players at home (which both do). I can go either way however I burn more DVD-R since the media is cheaper.

  3. DVD+R is guonna die out unless they get cheaper.

  4. I can burn both, But I buy my 4x +R on sale and I've been paying around $1.30 lately (cheaper tha 4X -R) Or same price on sale and +R seems to close out quicker so I still buy it then.

On Sale I have been finding +R cheaper.

I only buy brand name generally, TDK & Verbatim, they burn all the way to the edge and never give me playback problems. ( a few Princo tho) No Accu, Ritek etc.

And I prefer buying local at a B&M when the price is as good or better than internet. SO many of the internet shops have off brand cheaper but brand name is higher.

    YMMV

  5. There's nothing special about name-brand DVD-+R. It's all in the dye the manufacturers use. Ritek is absolutely wonderful, and it has the completely white top, so it looks good too!

I'm begining to agree with this. I've been burning alot of plus media. My Sony DVD Player will play it all. I've burned some DVD -R media with my Sony as well. Bought a portable DVD player by Initial this past week. Plays VCDs fine, DVD -R's fine but not DVD +R at all (no disc error). I took a gamble buying the unit cause it said nothing about being able to play any of the above. So I went out and loaded up on Verbatims DVD -R and will stick to this format so I can play my back-ups on all my equipment. One of these days everyone will be on the same page.

Allow me to answer your answers

Let me count: TWO of mine + another TWELVE reported by "dvdrhelp" members(linked) + in the meantime I found that player on ricoh website as compatible.

Thats min. FIFTEEN to something (depends how you count: two media with three writer)

So the one I tested can`t be a magic one (that was very kind of you)
You left me two more answer. (incopetent tester, bad batch of media)
    Pick any.

The fact: They did flash the drives.
When Mrs Smith buys a writer that comes with a firmware that`s what we can call DEFAULT.
The time goes she gets to know why and more important HOW she should update it, she is going to bump into the bitsetting.
When Mrs Smith uses Nero there are compatibility options : Finalizing?,UDF?, ISO?, Joliet?,...oops here is BOOKYPE. Just a button. WHY NOT PRESS IT? Easier then flashin isn`t it?
There are bitsetter utilities next to firmware updates on manufacturers websites, would you call any of them default?

    I think I was clear.
They WANT(?) a Ricoh. Ricoh doesn`t support them. They get one for reading! How? They dont get the other one for writing. No BUDGET? No full scale test. A couple of teens could do a similar test then.

No, don`t be a robot. But it was not the first (and only). Wanna joke continuously? Go offtopic.

When thxkid says 50 player 100% playback, same here and both of us has OEM RICOH drive, and I`ve been PMing another guy same results there........That makes me think.
I think I`ll just go get a lottery.
