  1. Hi All -

I have a Sony laptop and an external Sony 510 U burner. I would like to stick a DVD in the laptop and a blank in the burner and backup movie DVDs.

I have looked thru alot of the site, but most stuff looks like it involves rippping to the hardrive first, which is what I am doing now.

    Whats my best bet for:

    A - 9 to 5 using 2 disks

    B - 9 to 5 using 1 disk

Without ripping to my hard drive?

Oh yeah, something free or cheap would be nice too.

    Thanks,

    E

Unless you're copying 5-to-5, it will ALWAYS rip to the hard disk. Sorry.

  4. Bummer. Thanks for the info though.

How about for 5 to 5 with a reader and a burner?

  5. errr....kinda need to "rip" because commerical DVDs are encrypted...it's not a simple 1:1 copy...

you need to rip to remove the encryption

Gurm, I'm sure, was speaking of disc-to-disc, on-the-fly copying, which does not use the hard drive. That is, a straight 1:1 copy of a non-encrypted disc -- i.e., you can run off a quick copy of a backup you've made, or a non-encrypted, commercial DVD (rare).

could depend on which software used to make the original backup (oxymoron ;p)...... DVDXCOPY prevents ppl from making a "backup" of its backup... i'm sure there are ways around it, but prolly not as simple as 1:1 direct, on-the-fly copy

i've also heard other softwares may be implementing this type of protection to be more legal under DMCA's terms

Or if you have AnyDVD installed, on-the-fly backups of DVD5 are simple and easy.

Yeah, I'm pimping AnyDVD pretty hard in here... because it's awesome software.

Drag VIDEO_TS folder to desktop, then burn -- It's that simple. DVDXCopy has no backup copy protection. If so, it doesn't work on either of my systems.

  10. Yes, You can do a disc-to-disc copy if you have the following set up:
2 dvd drives (the burner and the source) must be install tow SEPARATE IDE channels.

well...i don't know then... i personally haven't used DVDXCOPY as it's $99 and has that stupid disclaimer....

however, i've read that part of its anti-piracy effort is to prevent backups of backups...guess it's not working

I've seen this in other posts. I think the origin of this belief is a statement made by 321Studios that *their* software could not be used for copying copies.

Yes. I think that DVDXCopy won't copy one of its own copies, but that's hardly necessary.

  14. fyi - I tried AnyDVD with the crappy DVD copy utility that came with my sony drive.

When I tried to copy Striptease (DVD5), the utilty did not tell me it couldnt make the copy (appeared to work), but when I tried to play back the copy, I had no video and choppy audio.

I de-installed AnyDVD and using the same program, made a copy of Josey Wales that I had previously made with DVD Shrink (so it was unencryted) - worked fine.

Not too happy with the performance of AnyDVD.
