    Hey all -

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a guide or website that gives a comparison of the end file sizes for various codecs.

    i.e. - Huffy is approx. 26Gb / hour
DV is approx. 13Gb / hour
    etc.

another, related question - is there a significant difference in encoding between capture codecs? i.e. if I cap the same video with the same settings as a Huffyuv avi, and capture it again as a DV avi, will the encoder treat them the same, or will one be faster / easier on the encoder than the other?

any info, links, references, anecdotes, rants, biased opinions from industry flaks or fried catfish appreciated.

  2. Hope this site helps somewhat. I don't know if it will be a lot of use to you but it does have some facts on it:

    http://www.100fps.com

Just another comparison for your Pic Video MJPEG at full quality is 8GB/hr.

Using different codecs but trying to make all the settings the same will still produce different quality captures eg, a HUFFYUV capture will produce much better results than a full quality PicVideo MJPEG capture, because they compress the video in different ways.
You may not notice this in the captured file, but once it is re-encoded you will probably notice a difference.

Different codecs will take different times to encode according to the quality, eg. if you use a high quality codec and re-encode it it will take longer to encode than a low quality codec, because it has to decode more information then compress all that information.

These are just my 2 cents, but hope they help.

  4. Pic Video MJPEG is about 5 gigs per 45min if set to quality 18. Huffy's captures are way to big for me to use. I would use MPEG2 but that results in to much dropped frames.

  5. That site only has file sizes for divx and huffyuv though.

I wouldn't bother too much about MPEG2 captures, I used to capture in MPEG2 using the guide by Lordsmurf, but decided the final product after using the MJPEG codec was much better. The real-time captures just weren't good enough for me even although my source was digital TV through a composite connection to my video card. I didn't have the problem with dropped frames though.

I agree that the HUFFYUV captures are way too big and for me the difference between this and MJPEG was not much to be noticed.

when I capture in 1/4 resolution(352x288), Huffy needs 10GB per hour.
Encoding to mpeg is very fast (50fps with CCE and 20fps with tmpgenc)
