I have a bunch of VHS-C home-video camcorder tapes that I am converting to DVD. The first step is to convert the VHS-C tapes in to miniDV tapes (my Canon optura PI does not do digital passthrough to firewire). Basically I am recording to my digicam from an old analog VCR or camcorder.

The only old camcorder/VCRs I have access to have composite outputs.
The digicam does have S-video in. The miniDVs that I created using the
composite inputs were fine, and the DVD looks very good, but I wonder
if I can do better by using the S-Video in, by buying/borrowing an
    analog camcorder/VCR with S-Video out.

if the answer is yes, do you know of a cheap VCR/VHS-C camcorder that
I can buy for this reason?

    Thanks

You can get sharper images (on the fine detail) with S-Video cables. That said, there are no sharp details from your old analog VHS tapes (VHS is essentially VCD resolution). If it looks good, stick with it.

S-video is superior to composite- however I think it will be hard to locate a VHS-C Camera with an S-Video output, as the only video cameras I have seen with them on were either high-band analogue cameras(Hi-8) or digital cameras. Might be wrong though

I did locate a JVC GR-SXM250U camcorder that has s-video output.
I have used it to convert some tapes. They look quite good, but I am not sure if they look noticeably better than the ones I made with composite connections. They probably are better.
At least I have the satisfaction that I have done as much as I can to preserve the quality of our precious memories.
