I can't copy single layer DVD's. No problems with dual layer ones! I've made several coasters, need some help.
Here is what happens: I have a DVD. It is 1 layer (I confirm this with DVD Decrypter). I use DVD Decrypter to copy files in File mode to the hard drive.
I look at the files in Windows Explorer and confirm the files are less than 4 GB in space. I then burn a DVD with Nero. I use UDF/ISO, selecting UDF 1.02, not selecting long file names (yada yada), creating a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directory, putting everything in the VIDEO_TS directory. I burn the disk and it doesn't play!!
Now here's the kicker. With DVD-9 (dual layer DVD's), after DVD Decrypter, I used DVD2ONE to compress the files so it will fit on one disk, before I create the disk with Nero. When I do that it works perfectly every time!!
So the question is - why does it work when I have to compress the files, but if I take the original files I make coasters? My workaround it to use DVD2one anyway, and compress it "just a little bit" to re-write the files. It's a workaround that doesn't make sense to me. Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong?

You dont use file mode for single layer disk with DVD Decrypter just use iso read mode then burn with eithier nero or disk juggler.
-
I just rip the DVD with SmartRipper to a VIDEO_TS folder then burn that folder with RecordNow Max. Works every time.
-
actually, DVD5s should be much easier to deal with, as they fit perfectly on a DVD-R/+R, without any re-encoding or transcoding...should be as simple as rip and burn with nothing in between.
-
As already suggested the only tool you need is DVD DECRYPTER. Simply RIP the DVD using ISO READ mode. Then put in your black DVD recordable and burn using DVD DECRYPTER in ISO WRITE mode.
The ripping process will remove the region code info as well as all forms of copy protection. Not only will the DVD copy be a perfect bit-for-bit copy but it will be region free and copy protection free.
Very simple and easy to do.

P.S.
Some people will babble on and on that NERO is just FINE for DVD BURNING but many people have trouble using NERO to BURN a DVD and I am of the opinion that NERO sucks donkey balls in this department. I only use NERO for CD-R burning myself. I only use DVD DECRYPTER for BURING DVD discs and have never had a problem with it. If you have DVD VIDEO files but not an image file you can use ImgTool (classic version only!) to create an IMAGE file then BURN with DVD DECRYPTER. Of course you don't need to use ImgTool when simply making a copy of a DVD5 disc."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

@dvdflea, contraray to what the other poster said, you can use DVD Decrypter in file mode each and every single time with DVD5's. The problem I believe you are having is that you are ONLY ripping the default files in FILE MODE and NOT ALL the files. What you need to do in file mode is once DVD DECRYPTER has selected your main PGC you need to hit "CTRL A" on your keyboard. This will select ALL FILES...rip them to the hard drive and burn using Nero as you have in the past.
Another simple way to handle DVD5's is to use a function with DVD Decrypter which Smart Ripper doesn't offer. That is, rip the disk as an ISO and burn the ISO using DVD Decrypter's burn engine.
Either one of the two options should work perfectly.
One other thing to note is that when I am ripping DVD5's I ALWAYS go to "RUN" and my DVD ROM which the DVD5 is in....I then select "ALL FILES" from the pulldown tab... and I check and see if there is a "JACKET" folder...if there is, I simple transfer it to the hard drive by dragging it which makes an exact copy on your HD. I then burn that along with the Video and Audio_TS folders.
If you are using ISO mode and NOT file mode, you won't need to do this.
Good Luck -
I have the same problem, and it seems to be Nero there is the problem, Nero have no problems Burning DVDs if its the movie only, but if there is menus and other stuff on the DVD, it will not work with Nero, i have tried burning the same files with Nero and Record Max, doesnt work with Nero, but works with Record Max. So use DVD Decrypter to rip and burn with.

@FulciLives, i'm personally using the latest version of nero express...so far, it's working great.
dvddecryptor's iso mode ripping and imgtool's iso mode won't work with hdd formated as FAT32 (i.e. win98). since files get truncated at 3.99 gigs..those .iso files will be truncated.
hence, for ppl like me, we need to be able to burn the files individually, rather than make one huge image file out of all the files. nero express does the job well for me.
------
@defense, or in dvddecryptor, you could
1) edit->select all files
2) tools->setting->file mode->on startup->select all files...after this, dvddecryptor will select all files by default -
dvdflea, I've had the same problem...I don't know what it is or what is happening but I have had problems with about 80% of DVD-5's that I try to burn.
I can rip / compress / delete and otherwise screw around with a DVD-9 to make it fit and I have no troubles at all.....but a simple DVD-5 to DVD-R copy eludes me. In the end I've found that running the DVD-5 through dvd2one or dvdshrink makes a perfectly playable DVD....even though nothing is happening (or is there???).
I'm not sure what it is but strange things happen if I do a file copy or ISO rip with DVD decrypter....and burning with DVD Decrypter or Nero has the same effect.
Normally I shrink a movie and burn with Nero no problems so there must be something else happening if you process it with dvd2one...try it out on a DVD-5 and let us know."Weekends don't count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless."

@bartman
since my hdd (FAT32) can't handle .iso files over 4 gig...i just rip entire DVD using dvddecryptor's file mode and drag-and-drop the files into nero express to burn a DVD. basically exact copy, minus any PC features. -
Just for everyones information, you can use DVD Decrypter on FAT32 drives in ISO mode. DVD Decrypter will automatically split the image file at the 4G mark and then append the next file when burning. I have done this quite a bit with no troubles. You have to use DVD Decrypter to burn though since it isn't a 100% compatible ISO formatted file, its an MDS file.
Just thought I would pass this on because it sounds like people are making it harder than it has to be from the above messages. -
I would think that because the dvd-5 works when you run it through dvdshrink, but not when you simply burn the ripped files, that you are not ripping all of the necessary files, and correcting the ifos with ifoedit. If you just rip off the movie and burn it, oftentimes it will not play because it is missing the video_ts.ifo. If you can only fit the main movie on, create new ifos with ifoedit, then burn the whole thing and it will work 100%. Or an easier solution is run it through dvdshrink as it will correct the ifos on its own.

I've been having a problem similar to this and it seems to me that whenever I burn in DVDDecrypter I get the problem. If I burn the ISO in CloneDVD, I do not get this issue. DVD-5 should be easier but I guess its all on the programs you use. I personally use DVDDecrypter, DVD2ONE (if needed) and then CloneDVD. I haven't had any real significant problems and no coasters to date as even the DVDs I mentioned above that gave me a hard time do work in some standalone DVD Players. I haven't tried Pinnacle Instant Copy but I also hear that is great to use.

I use DVDDcryptor in iso mode as well and it seems to work quite well. The one trick I do though is give the computer a reboot before I start, especially if it's been on for a while and I've been doing other things with it, after all, no one has ever accused Windows of being an exact science! I have had the same problems with Nero that a number of people mentioned and have also resigned myself to using it for CD burning only. The other bit of advice is what many others have mentioned is to ALWAYS burn to an R/W disk and test it first, unless of course you're in need of a few more coasters. 8)

I would have thought that ripping a DVD in ISO mode would work since you are copying everything from the DVD....including all IFO's, BUP's and VOB's.......but it isn't the case therefore there must be something that DVD2One and DVD Shrink do to the IFO's that makes it all work properly.
Here's my experience though:
I have 2 DVD players, an expensive Phillips and an el'cheapo XMS. The Phillips cannot play DVD-RW and is VERY picky about DVD-R but in a nutshell, DVD2One and DVD Shrink DVD's work in this player whereas a direct DVD-5 to DVD-R copy doesn't. This player also does not like anything that has been touched by IFOEdit
The XMS player can play anything under the sun, including DVD-RW, stuffed up DVD-R and the DVD-5 to DVD-R copies however its decoding quality leaves a lot to be desired (looks great on anything under 59cm though)
It is hard to test using DVD-RW with a player that is very relaxed about what it plays. I think that the XMS gets the bare minimum info from the DVD to play whereas the Phillips wil examine the DVD to make sure the structure is 100% compliant.
For now though, since it takes the same time, I rip my DVD-5's with DVD Shrink...it takes just as long to rip as an ISO or file mode backup, the quality remains the same and it works in my Phillips player."Weekends don't count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless."

Dudes ...
You are all freaking whacked.
RIP the DVD using ISO READ mode in DVD Decrypter
BURN the DVD using ISO WRITE mode in DVD Decrypter
END OF STORY
I mean really c'mon now. You all sound like a bunch of newbies. Making a back-up of a single layer DVD is the most SIMPLE thing there is in the world of DVD ripping and burning.
Giving me a friggin' headache here already!

I can understand that you probably think you know what you are talking about because it probably works for you and for 99% of people out there. This thread is for those 1% that is does not work for.
This is a rare problem that some people are experiencing (myself included)....if no-one asks question as to why it is happening then there will never be an answer. Please do not assume that because it works for you it will work for others "end of story". That is not a constructive way of solving a problem."Weekends don't count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless."

either ripping in ISO mode or all the files in file mode should work because ALL the DVD FILES are included, as is....nothing has been modified....
there could be lots of other explanations...dvd player, media, burn speed, burning proggie (DVDdecryptor in the case of ISO mode ripping, but i rip in file mode and use nero express to burn...no problems whatsoever on my pioneer dv333). -
I agree that ripping in ISO mode SHOULD work.....and it does on my XMS player....but not on my Phillips. Believe me, I have tried everything, ripping in ISO mode, ripping in File mode, using different rippers, using different burning programs, using different media (around 7 different types at last count)......all with the same result. Unless I "process" the DVD with either DVD2One, DVD Shrink or InstantCopy it just won't work in my Phillips player. So I don't bother about it anymore and if I have a DVD-5 I need to copy I use DVD Shrink since it rips and does whatever it does in the same step.

I don't understand why my "playa' be WHACK". It was designed to play authentic DVD's and it does so rather well. I think it was designed with the full DVD Spec in mind with no slack in the rules, unlike the majority of the players out there these days.
BTW, I am impressed with your command of the English language.....dawg."Weekends don't count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless."

i just have to say i have burnt 20 dvd's with nero in 2 weeks, and have not had 1 problem, there was a problem i noticed in other threads saying old nero didnt handle dvd's well but if ya upgrade to the latest nero it works perfectly, i had only made 1 dvd that didnt work, cos i forgot something on the menu, so to ppl saying nero dosnt work, just update and it should be fine
-
CAUSE NERO SUCKS BIG TIME
-
I've had no problem either with DVD's burnt with Nero.....even on my 'WHACK playa'. The only times I have a problem is if I screw up the disk myself somehow (or I do a DVD Decryptor DVD-5 rip and burn
....BTW, I don't think DVD Decryptor sucks just because it doesn't work for me....It is a good tool to have and I admire the smart cookie(s) that wrote it )
marvel2020, if you think Nero sucks then feel free to write something that works better...."Weekends don't count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless."
Bartman 8) -
If you don't know how to use Nero (or you use an old version), it probably would "suck big time".
However, I've used Nero since it's inception some years back. It's fine. You just have to know what it can and cannot do. And track bug reports and update as needed.
It's burned perfectly complaint DVD-Video for several versions now. Since 5.5.10.20.
It's not a dummy-proof program, but it's fairly easy. Just don't use that stupid wizard. That thing is a waste of code.
Goto NEW->DVD->DVD-Video and then drag/drop your files. Easy. Discs play anywhere.
That assumes your data is compliant. If not, that's your fault.I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored. -

I'm stating the fact that if you do a search on DVDrhelp you will see that more people have had more problems burning with Nero than any other software.

I remember you that DVDDecrypter MODIFY the ifos files to remove the user-prohibitions and the macrovision protection!!!!!!!
So if your player do not play ifoedit modified ifos then is possible that your player do not play ifos modified by dvddecrypter.
